| NEWS! Palladium Books and Kevin Siembieda recognized by the Detroit Historical Museum for contributions to tabletop games |
|
| Exhibit Opening is February 7th, 1 PM, please join us
This is one of the greatest honors of my life (a DragonCon award and GAMA Hall of Fame are up there too). To be recognized in an exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum in downtown Detroit feels like a wonderful dream. |
|
| | | Come to the Worlds of Palladium Exhibit OPENING – Saturday, February 7 – Meet Kevin Siembieda at 1 PM till closing (5 PM)
Ask me questions, bring books for me to sign, and meet Palladium Books staffers like Alex Marciniszyn, Wayne Smith, and Caleb Nelson who will also be present at 1 PM for a while. There is a more formal discussion with me and the curator from 3:00-3:30pm, but I will be there till closing. How many game designers and RPG companies have ever had an exhibit in a historical museum? It’s astonishing to be recognized by my home town of Detroit in my lifetime. Please share in this joyful and historic celebration.
ALSO see the Heroes vs. Villains: Detroit’s Comic Book Story exhibit nearby. I am just one of the many Detroit comic creators recognized. (Alex and I created and published Detroit’s first comic book, A+Plus!) Mike Kucharski, who did artwork for various early Palladium titles as well as Erick’s Amber Diceless RPG and Amberzine, is also recognized in the Comic Book exhibit (which ends September 13, 2026). |
|
| | | The Worlds of Palladium Exhibit – runs from February 7 thru September 19, 2026 – Detroit Historical Museum – 5401 Woodward Ave, Detroit, Michigan, 48202 – telephone: 313-833-1805 – Admission: $15 for adults, Children 6-12 $8. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, Open Wednesday thru Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Sunday 1-5 PM. Heck, make a day of it, and see all the awesome Historical Museum exhibits including the Streets of Old Detroit (my all-time fave) and the Detroit art museum is across the street; it’s one of the best in the country. |
|
| | | In the months ahead, when you’re in the area to see the Worlds of Palladium exhibit, you may call Palladium ahead of time (734-721-2900) to see if Kevin and/or staff member may be available to give you a brief tour of the Palladium office and warehouse – practically a gaming museum in and of itself – and hang out for 20 minutes or so, bring books to sign. If we are not too busy and available, we are happy to do this for you. Entire families and groups of friends are welcome. Subject to availability and our production schedule. No guarantee you can visit. (734-721-2900 office tel – 39074 Webb Court – Westland, MI – near Ford Road and I-275 and an Ikea). |

| | COMING! A weekend of conversation with Kevin Siembieda this spring |
|
| Because so many friends and fans have told me they want to come in from out of town to see and celebrate the Worlds of Palladium Exhibit with me (thank you everyone, I am deeply touched) – I thought I would do a special weekend event when it’s warmer and nicer, like the end of April or early May, to help make their trip special.
This is NOT a Palladium Open House! No gaming. YOU will be responsible for your own food, hotel, and travel arrangements. Probably limited to 50 or 60 people on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a weekend with me and the guys. A gathering of friends like a family reunion or a big birthday party. (Hey, I am turning 70 in April.) A time to just visit and chat. I’m thinking of a Friday AND Saturday event in April or May.
The idea is, you go see the exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum (see the Comic Book one too) one morning or early afternoon, and then you come to the Palladium Books warehouse to hang out that afternoon and evening. Nothing fancy. Ask me and the rest of us questions about the history of Palladium Books, the Detroit Gaming Center, Erick Wujcik, the early days of the RPG industry, your favorite game books, world settings, game design, etc., get autographs, buy stuff you’re missing, and have a nice time. More details to follow. |

| | | Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store |
|
| Palladium collectibles, books, artwork, and negatives, as well as action figures, toys, and other items from Kevin Siembieda’s personal collection are available from this Ebay store!
One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Last year at Granite State Comic Con, Kevin Eastman had TMNT negatives from the first comic book on display.
Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. These are the photographic negatives being sold as individual works of art and collectibles. When matted or framed on a white background they look like dynamic wood cut prints. And they are on sale right now! |

| | | | Being part of gaming history is a precious gift
The Worlds of Palladium at the Detroit Historical Museum, February 7 thru September 19th, has more significance for me than you might think. The Detroit Historical Museum has always been one of my favorite places to visit, especially in my youth, and holds a truly special place in my heart.
Whenever I went to the Detroit Institute of Arts museum across the street, or the main library across the other street, I would pop into the Historical Museum and visit all three. (And when I was a little kid, my family would make a stop at the Children’s Museum a little ways down on Kirby Street.) There was a period in my teens when I would make this pilgrimage by bus almost every weekend. These were three of my happy places. Each a home away from home and a place that fueled my imagination and inspired my creativity. The Streets of Old Detroit permanent exhibit in the basement still fires up my imagination.
These bastions of the arts and history, and the area around them, not only played a huge role in my development as an artist, writer, and publisher, but seemed like part of my destiny. I would end up attending the Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design just a couple blocks east of the Detroit Historical Museum. A few years later I’d become involved with the Wayne Weregamers, the gaming club at Wayne State University whose campus lies one block west of the museum. Not only that, Erick Wujcik and I (with help from many others) would establish the Detroit Gaming Center (DGC), another happy place, about 6 blocks south on Cass Avenue not far from Erick’s apartment on Prentis. So in a way, this all feels like coming home.
It is amazing and humbling to be recognized and celebrated by my hometown of Detroit. I am happy to have had such a positive influence on not just the gaming industry, but millions of gamers and creative individuals. Countless numbers of fans continue to tell us how much joy our games have brought into their lives and inspired their own creative pursuits.
Here are some of the milestones of Palladium Books’ 45 years
– Our covers, artwork, worldbuilding, and lore raised the standards of the RPG industry and continue to inspire generations of game designers, writers, artists, comic book creators, actors, filmmakers, and all kinds of people.
– Palladium was the first to introduce softcover “perfect bound” books onto the RPG market.
– Palladium was one of the very first to move away from generic game settings in a big way, starting with The Mechanoid Invasion Trilogy (1981) and Palladium Fantasy RPG (1983) and quickly followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness, Robotech, Ninjas & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural, Rifts, Nightbane, and all the rest.
– Palladium was the first to produce a universal game system starting with the Mechanoid Invasion Trilogy (1981).
– We were proud to learn that the Palladium Weapon Series books by me and Matthew Balent (and one by Erick Wujcik and another by Maryann Garner) were being added to libraries and used in some schools. They are indeed, well researched and historically accurate. Great job, Matt.
– Palladium Books is the first RPG company to create a true universe of many unique game worlds that fit almost every genre from fantasy and science fiction to super-heroes, modern horror, urban fantasy, zombies, post-apocalypse, space opera, military/war, and the mult-genre mixing pot that is uniquely Rifts.
For the proof, see game lines like The Mechanoids Trilogy, Palladium Fantasy RPG, Heroes Unlimited, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness, Robotech, Macross II, RECON, Ninjas & Superspies, Beyond the Supernatural, Rifts, Phase World, Nightbane, Systems Failure, Dead Reign, and After the Bomb. By the way, there are a few genres we plan to explore in the future.
– Palladium Books was the first company to license the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1985). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG became our first mega-hit. See the new, remastered, full color, Redux Editions available now.
– Palladium Books was the first game company to license Robotech (1986) and it became our second mega-hit.
– Palladium Books was the first to release on VHS tape (1989/1990) the following Robotech anime series: Robotech II: The Sentinels, Southern Cross/The Masters Saga, and New Generation. Each a bestseller that helped launch the anime VHS explosion in the early 1990s.
– Palladium was the first game license of Macross II (1989).
– Rifts was one of the first RPGs to combine two genres such as fantasy and science fiction into a unique world setting – Shadowrun and TORG being the other two that came out within the same time period. And Rifts is the very first to combine five or more genres in one setting.
– Rifts has out sold TMNT & Other Strangeness and Robotech combined, making it our biggest hit ever. There are 100+ Rifts titles continuously in print.
– Palladium is the first and only game publisher to anything like the Christmas Surprise Package.
– I had the incredible honor of helping found the Detroit Gaming Center (DGC; 1980) with the illustrious Erick Wujcik, Renee Vega, Matthew Balent, and a few others. The first of its kind in Detroit, and perhaps the nation, as an independent non-profit organization not funded or supported by a university or school. Erick and Matthew kept it going at one location or another and form or another for two decades.
– I had the great honor of being the first (and only?) role-playing game designer to be invited to the campus of Blizzard Entertainment to speak on the subject of worldbuilding (2010).
– I have written or co-written more than 200 RPG books and created more than a dozen unique worlds.
– I had the privilege of giving some legendary artists their first published art job including Ramon K. Perez, Tyler Walpole, and Freddie E. Williams II, amongst others. And have had the joy of working with many artists of renown (Steranko, Corben, Bissett, Hickman, Elmore, Eastman, Laird, and others).
I love meeting and chatting with some of the millions of gamers who have played our games and gotten countless hours of joy from them. I’m absolutely tickled every time I hear about parents passing our games on to their children, cousins, nieces and nephews.
When I first started Palladium Books, I didn’t even consider the lasting positive and joyful experience our games would bring to the players. I just wanted people to have fun and to share the types of games, worlds, heroes, and stories that I loved.
I have always been a big kid with an overactive imagination. I have a deep affection for art and stories of every kind, in every medium. I have been blessed with sharing those stories and inspiring others for 45 years, and I hope to continue to do so for many years to come.
My dear, dear friend Alex Marciniszyn says the Worlds of Palladium exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum, along with increasing invitations to be a guest at conventions, is the recognition I deserve for a lifetime of creativity. Sean agrees. All I know for sure is, I find it beautiful and humbling to have inspired and brought joy to so many. Please keep your own imaginations burning bright and dare to follow your dreams like I did. You’ll never regret it.
