Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

Palladium collectibles, books, artwork, and negatives, as well as action figures, toys, and other items from Kevin Siembieda’s personal collection are available from this Ebay store! New items added regularly.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Last year at Granite State Comic Con, Kevin Eastman had TMNT negatives from the first comic book on display. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed. These are the photographic negatives being sold as individual works of art and collectibles. When matted or framed on a white background they look like dynamic wood cut prints.

Closing Thoughts – Escape into Fantasy

Over the past few months – but especially these past few weeks – I have spoken to several friends and family members who are feeling down. They can’t point to anything specific and say things like: “Everything just seems bad – uncertain – ugly – hopeless.”

I understand, because I had been feeling that way myself lately, and I couldn’t point to anything specific either. I was just blah. Is it something in the zeitgeist? The political atmosphere? The summer heat? I didn’t know. I just wanted to stop feeling that way. I wanted to feel uplifted and happy.

What pulled me out of my doldrums was a sequence of events. I had a series of uplifting calls from people telling me how much they loved me and my work. A couple of people were fans but complete strangers. Several were friends I hadn’t heard from in quite a while so it was a pleasant surprise. But I still felt blah, and now I was angry with myself because such sincere and kind words didn’t seem to do much to lift me out of my doldrums. What’s wrong with me, I pondered. Had I become jaded? Was I suffering from depression? Or what? In reality, those calls meant the world to me, but those positive emotions were still being held down by the blahs.

I hesitantly bought an expensive art book featuring the work of Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man comic books from the 1960s. I made this impulsive decision based entirely on the cover, the promise of what awaited inside, and the desire to do something nice for myself. Ditko is a comic book legend on the level of Jack Kirby and his work was a big influence on my own art and development as an artist and storyteller. Lost in my despondent and angry mood, however, I spent the entire drive home beating myself up for spending so much money on a stupid book that’s probably not even worth it. I even thought about turning around and taking it back for a refund before I took it out of the box and cellophane wrapper. The damn book weighs a ton and made a loud thud when I plopped it down on the kitchen table, where I continued to further debate with myself about returning it.

Finally, I took the book out of the box and carried the massive tome to the couch, laid it down in the middle of the sofa, and carefully cut and peeled away the cellophane. The book is so large (the original comic book page size which was quite large in those days) and heavy (quality paper), that it filled an entire spot where a person would sit. I knelt down in front of the couch and opened the book to a random page. That’s when the sun shined through the window blinds and the angels began to sing.

The book was beautiful. The artwork was magnificent. The visual flow and artistry and storytelling combined to create one incredible masterwork after another. I know this will sound silly, but I could feel my heart swelling just like the Grinch’s on Christmas morning in Whoville. My blahs evaporated with every turn of the page. I spent two hours on my knees studying every panel and brush stroke. I let myself be swept away to a wondrous happy place that, somehow, I had almost forgotten. All of a sudden, as my heart soared and my mind cleared, ideas for RPG books and adventures began to form in my head. The blahs were gone and I was back.

Don’t you forget that our hobbies and the people and things that we love, inspire us, and bring us joy, are always there for us. They hold the power to make the blahs and hopelessness disappear and restore joyful and a happier perspective.

We role-playing gamers are doubly fortunate because the very design of RPGs is to inspire and create an escape into joyous, heroic adventure. They inspire our imaginations even when we just read the book or flip through the illustrations, let alone when we create a character and dive into a game. That was the gist of the calls from my friends and fans earlier that week: “Thank you, Kevin, for publishing RPGs that have inspired us as writers, artists, and gamers, and have brought us so much joy. We love them and we love you.” How beautiful is that? I am humbled and delighted.

So draw upon your RPG resources right there on your bookshelves and on your computers. Reread your favorite books as well as the ones you don’t fully remember because there are probably things that will spark your imagination and lift your spirits. Try new RPG settings especially when there are big sales. Take advantage of sales from Palladium Books like the Mutant and Monstrous Worlds Sale taking place this weekend and certainly the Mutants and Ninjas Bundle of Holding. For less than $30 you can get 21 PDF books worth nearly $300, and even if you aren’t into the setting or mutants, ninjas, mystical martial artists, or spies, you know the artwork and reading about the characters, villains, gear, powers, and world will give you ideas for whatever game setting you are into. Mine these sales and books for ideas and escape to a joyful place of adventure. A place that can chase away the blahs whenever you need them to do so. Stay frosty and game on.

Rifts® SALE & News – Palladium Books® – Weekly Update – July 10, 2025

Weekly Update

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF RIFTS® – ONE GAME SYSTEM – EVERY GENRE – COUNTLESS WORLDS – ENDLESS ADVENTURE

BY KEVIN SIEMBIEDA

Rifts® SALE & News – Palladium Books® – Weekly Update – July 10, 2025

Did you enjoy a nice 4th of July Weekend? We hope so. The Palladium staff got in some much deserved R&R. My weekend was a combination of work (a little Gen Con prep and a lot of writing on Yin-Sloth Expeditions) and fun (saw a couple movies). My thanks to those of you who ordered books over the long holiday weekend. We appreciate your support.

Our big Rifts sale is in its final two weeks so if you’ve been meaning to snag some of the 80+ titles on sale, time is running out, and so are some of the books. Rifts Black Market has now joined the titles temporarily out of stock. We hope it will be back with a new cover in time for Gen Con. (All Rifts titles will be on sale at Gen Con!)

News Briefs

● Palladium’s new website! Have you seen it? Isn’t it nice? Hmm well, maybe not if you found it Tuesday or Wednesday when it was running sloooooow and we were still finding and working out the bugs. The speed issues and glitches should be mostly fixed at this point, but if you find any issues, please let us know about them as soon as possible. People seem most excited about being able to order PDFs directly from Palladium, but there are a lot of nice, new features you should enjoy once everything is running smoothly.

● Check your mailbox for a Palladium flyer. We sent out a promotional flyer that should be arriving any time now. It talks about the Rifts® 35th Anniversary Celebration and current sale, Gen Con (all Rifts titles will be on sale at Booth 1515 while supplies last), upcoming releases, and other things of interest. And it provides your first look at the new covers for Rifts Psi-Ops: Psychic War (formerly Coalition Manhunters) and Rifts Black Market. Sean and I have some fun and exciting things in store for you in the months ahead.

● Last 2 weeks of Rifts® 35 year Anniversary Sale – 20% off sale on 80+ Rifts books – ends July 23 – so place your order before you forget. And also because Rifts books are temporarily selling out. We’ll reprint them, of course, but that takes 5-10 weeks, so if there are certain Rifts titles you know you want badly, we recommend you order soon in case they sell out. See complete sale details, below.

● Temporarily sold out! Rifts Black Market, Rifts Coalition Manhunters, Rifts Bionics Sourcebook, and Rifts® Primer & Adventures are temporarily sold out and we are running low on Rifts Underseas and a few others. Available on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last.

● Back in Stock in time for the Rifts® Sale! The ever popular Rifts Game Master Guide (softcover and hardcover), Rifts Book of Magic (softcover and hardcover), Rifts Cyberworks Collection (a compendium for Archie Three and a great companion for Titan Robotics), Psycape and Rifts Dinosaur Swamp, among others. And we just sent in another dozen titles for reprint last week. Please keep those orders coming and game on!

● NEW this Sunday! Online Event – Live Stream on Legion of Myth – Sunday, July 13 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time – chat with Kevin Siembieda and Jeremy Colantonio. Kevin and Jeremy will be back with more RPG talk and Game Master tips. The focus will be on one of my favorite subjects: how to create and use Non-Player Characters (NPCs) effectively. Can’t wait, please join us.

● NEW! Watch the Official History of Palladium Books while you lounge on your patio sipping a cool drink. A new episode goes live every other week. Gamers are loving them whether they are Palladium fans or just enjoy RPG history. You can find them on the Palladium Books YouTube channel. And there are a whole bunch of them now! Check out the fun chats with Legion of Myth and great podcasts with the Glitterbois. Hey Podcasters and YouTubers, we are happy to consider appearances on your shows too. Please reach out via the Help Desk. Thanks.

● COMING! Yin-Sloth Expeditions. Finally, my creative energies are flowing again and I’m making my final run on the Yin-Sloth Expeditions book. I’m currently expanding the material for the Dragon Gate Mountains and Dragonedra City of Dragons. And I’ll be adding new material and adventure hooks for other sections too. Including a villain that has plagued the Yin-Sloth Jungles across the ages. Yeah, I’m feeling pretty inspired at the moment.

Phase World for Savage Worlds Kickstarter

● COMING! Rifts® Phase World® Sourcebooks from Star Anvil, a new licensing partner. Their first Kickstarter probably launches in September (I misspoke when I said mid-July), but you can join their pre-launch campaign now. And you want to, because it’s gonna be great, with new settings, villains, spaceships, weapons, gear and more, easy to adapt to Palladium’s game system and any existing adventure campaign. As for you Savage Worlds players, you’ll be able to dive right in and run with it, because these books use the Savage Worlds game system. Personally, as someone who has seen the product outlines and art, I can’t wait to see these all new Phase World and the Three Galaxies™ sourcebooks. You’ll definitely want to follow and check it out.

Celebration of Rifts® SALE – 35 years – 80+ physical Rifts books 20% off

UPDATE! Closing the Rifts Promise of Power Reforged Campaign

Howdy Palladium fans, I wanted to personally inform you that we have decided to close the current Rifts: Promise of Power Reforged Backerkit campaign. As you can see, the initial interest is very high — something we’d be ecstatic for if it were any other project. But video games aren’t cheap and we have a lofty funding goal that we aren’t likely to hit at the current rate. Many fans have spoken online or reached out to us and we have listened carefully and learned a lot about what people want to see in a Rifts video game offering. Kevin and I remain excited about the project, but always knew this initial crowdfunding campaign might be more about testing the waters than anything else. That’s the beauty of crowdfunding, it lets us creators get feedback on potential projects directly from you, our loyal fans. So you can expect us to collate your input and other information and come back with a new plan for the Rifts Promise of Power video game in the future. We’re already exploring new ideas and approaches.

Thank you so much for your continued support in everything we do!

– Sean Owen Roberson and the Palladium Books team

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Glad to be writing again

I did my most inspired writing in a year and a half over the Independence Day weekend. It felt glorious. Finally, ideas were flowing and so were the words.

For months after Kathy Simmons’ death, I just couldn’t write. Actually, I did write, but it wasn’t up to my usual standards. Then for a while I could write things like the Weekly Update well, but more creative works continued to be difficult. So when I struggled with writing these past several months, I focused on doing video interviews and strategic planning with Sean, or dealt with artists and business matters.

When you’re a writer or an artist, the need to be creative is in your DNA. It’s not just what you do, it’s a primary function like breathing. You’re a storyteller. And in my case, I tell stories in words and pictures whether the art is by me or others. I build worlds and characters for gamers to take and spin into their own landscapes of adventure. And I love it. So it was frustrating to struggle for so many months.

Ah, but now it feels wonderful to have it all starting to flow again. And not just for Yin-Sloth Expeditions, but ideas for multiple books including the long-awaited BTS sourcebooks. I’ve been making notes for those other books and enjoying the flow of ideas and words again with Expeditions.

Well, that’s it for this Update. Enjoy the big Rifts sale and the collectibles and toys sale on my Ebay store. Get your creative energies flowing and try to get some gaming in, or do something else fun and creative this weekend. I hope to get more writing done.

ONE GAME SYSTEM – EVERY GENRE – COUNTLESS WORLDS – ENDLESS ADVENTURE

SALE & News – Palladium Books® – Weekly Update – May 29, 2025

Rifts Promise of Power Reforged

We hope many of you in the United States were able to enjoy a fun and relaxing Memorial Day weekend with friends and family.

Sean and I worked through the weekend as we have many irons in the fire that need tending. That includes moving TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG Redux along (almost there!) and other books in the pipeline; promoting the prelaunch campaign and prepping for the Rifts Promise of Power video game Reforged crowdfunder in June (very exciting, please check out our pre-launch page and spread the word!); the Promise of Rifts SALE (some of the Rifts books that inspired the video game on sale), and a number of behind the scenes secret projects, all of which require a whole lot of logistics.

The Lost Rifts video game – The Backerkit pre-launch campaign for the Rifts Promise of Power Reforged video game started a week or so ago. There are Backer advantages later when you follow the campaign now. We hope you will help spread the word about it to video game enthusiasts as well as tabletop gamers. For the full story, click the button below and join as a follower. More info and details will be added from time to time. The actual crowdfunding will begin in mid-June. Oh, and you can hear Sean and I (Kevin Siembieda) talk about it on the Glitterbois and Legion of Myth. More interviews are likely to follow. Spread the word.

Promise of Rifts Sale

SALE! The Promise of Rifts® SALE – Imagination Unleashed – 20% to 50% off

Now that you’re back to work and in need of a little fun, take a look at our ongoing Promise of Rifts Sale! I have selected titles that feature characters and locations in the Rifts® Promise of Power REFORGED and which inspired the original video game.

4 New Podcasts & YouTube Interviews

The Glitterbois Podcast

NEW! The Glitterbois podcast was the first podcast to discuss Rifts Promise of Power Reforged in an interview with both Kevin Siembieda and Sean Owen Roberson. This was a lively and informative conversation about the reforging of the lost Rifts video game. Previous Glitterbois episodes talk about all things Palladium Books with an increasing number of chats with Palladium’s founder and writer Kevin Siembieda as a returning guest. Other Palladium creators have also begun to join the fun with more in the future.

Legion of Myth

NEW! Legion of Myth – 2 new episodes! The May 25th livestream chat with Kevin Siembieda and Sean Owen Roberson is being turned into two episodes for your viewing enjoyment. One is questions and answers about the Rifts® Promise of Power REFORGED video game. The second is a passionate and lengthy debate about the viability and playability of the Shifter in Rifts. Both are fun and informative, and it was another long, marathon session, but so worthwhile. Sean and I will continue to return every month to chat about Palladium Books news, game titles, characters, game mechanics, GM tips, writing and all things Palladium Books. So keep your eyes open throughout the year and join the (usually) monthly conversations.

The History of Palladium Books on YouTube

NEW on the Palladium Books YouTube Channel – Rifts Promise of Power BONUS episode available now. J-M and I talk about the history of the Lost Rifts Video Game to give listeners a deeper understanding about the original game and the N-Gage. It is part of the ongoing Official History of Palladium Books with Kevin Siembieda & J-M DeFoggi. A new episode every other week provides behind the scenes insight and secrets about the making of your favorite Palladium RPGs and the people behind them. Please continue to spread the word about these fun videos and enjoy.

Episodes include:

Coming Soon to Palladium’s YouTube channel:

  • Ninjas & Superspies RPG – June 5th.

  • Julius Rosenstein: Without whom there may have been no Palladium Books – June 19th.

  • Beyond the Supernatural RPG, 1st Edition – July 3rd.

  • Erick Wujcik Part 1: Meets Kevin Siembieda – July 17.

  • Rifts RPG Part 1 – July 31st.

  • Erick Wujcik Part 2: Game Designer – August 14.

  • Watch for a new episode every other week and enjoy bonus episodes.

Rifts Promise of Power Reforged

Rifts® Promise of Power Reforged crowdfunding pre-launch campaign

One of our secret projects has been bringing back the lost Rifts video game for the personal computer and other game platforms with improved art, graphics, and sound.

Follow the pre-launch campaign to see the official press release and get additional info, news, and the opportunity to get special rewards when the crowdfunding goes live mid-June.

The announcement of the Rifts® Promise of Power video game being remade for the PC and modern game platforms has been overwhelmingly positive, but we need your continued support and help spreading the word. This is a big undertaking requiring a professional video game design company to make all the upgrades and changes. We can only make the video game if we have a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Note: The Rifts video game is a wonderful way to introduce Rifts to your friends and family who don’t play RPGs. The video game is designed to introduce Rifts to an entirely new audience as well as thrill fans of the RPG. The crowdfunder goes live mid-June, 2025. Watch for live streaming when we launch and other fun stuff.

The Rifts® Promise of Power Reforged video game will feature the following:

  • 30+ hours of game play on the main storyline, more for completionists!

  • Increased aspect ratio. Instead of the small screen size of the original N-Gage mobile device, play on a greatly expanded aspect ratio for modern screens – see Rifts Earth like never before!

  • The Glitter Boy, Coalition Grunt, and other portraits restored to their iconic likeness.

  • Seventeen playable classes drawn directly from the original tabletop role-playing game, including the Glitter Boy, Burster, Ley Line Walker, Cyber-Knight, Juicer, Mind Melter, Cyborg, Headhunter, Crazy, and Mystic.

  • Gain powerful allies – mercenaries, psychics, and mages – as you cross the post-apocalyptic wastes and lead your party in combat using their unique abilities.

  • Tactical turn-based combat on scenic battle maps featuring a dynamic 3D camera perspective so you can always be in control of your weapons and powers.

  • More than 50 enemy types – mutants, supernatural creatures, high-tech soldiers, and more – plus a diverse cast of characters, reflecting the varied denizens of Rifts Earth.

  • Over 100 weapons, spells, and psionics, plus all new weapons and gear exclusive for backers of the Reforged edition.

  • Travel to multiple locations from the Rifts setting – North America, England, the New German Republic, and China – each filled with unique challenges.

  • New physical rewards exclusive to crowdfunding backers!

Rifts® Promise of Power Reforged Stretch Goals:

  • Unlock a high-definition update to the original in-game art, including combat graphics.

  • Unlock an all new modern soundtrack with beautiful music.

  • Unlock support for extra platforms including consoles and mobile devices.

  • And much more!

Some are Palladium negatives, rare and out of print books, original Palladium artwork, prints, posters, as well as other collectible toys, action figures, Nightmare Before Christmas items, one-of-a-kind proofreader copies, books, and other good stuff – including Erick Wujcik’s rare and sought after Amberzine #12-15. Check in every week or so to see what’s new. All items come from Kevin Siembieda’s personal collection.

One-of-a-kind Palladium Books negatives (special and rare collectibles). Negatives are always very popular items at the Palladium Open House, Gen Con, and conventions, and are catching on as rare collectibles, unique in and of themselves. Before digital printing, pages of a book were laid out by hand on a board, and each page was photographed.

  • Each negative is truly unique, attractive, and fun to have.

  • Own a piece of Palladium Books and RPG history you will treasure.

  • Each was used to print the very book you may have in your collection (1981-2004).

  • Each is signed in silver ink by Kevin Siembieda and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

  • Each negative is a one-of-a-kind work of art (on rare occasions, two-of-a-kind if a page or section of pages were replaced or a second edition was made).

  • Looks great matted or framed! Fits an 8×10 inch matt opening. Each neg is roughly 8 ½ x 11 inches.

  • Prices vary depending on the title, the art, and quality of the negative. Note: Many have scratches, or blemishes, and/or an opaque medium on the negative. Still, they look great and are a piece of RPG history. We recommend you carefully examine the photographs of each item to avoid disappointment. The negatives of many books are sold out or were never available.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Big stuff, fun stuff

We all hope you’ll be as excited as we are by the big announcement on Monday or Tuesday. To be honest, it’s not anything I ever thought was possible for Palladium Books, but that’s why I brought in Sean Owen Roberson as my business partner and Creative Director, and why we have been making other strategic maneuvers as we lay down the foundation for our business plan. It has all involved a lot of top secret planning, networking, and making valuable new business partners.

We have big things and new avenues of product and marketing, but fear not, Palladium’s key focus is, and always will be tabletop RPGs. And if I could share some of those plans with you, you’d probably faint. More to come. Keep the faith.

Enjoy the new Fantasy Adventures & Dungeon Crawl SALE spanning a few game lines and saving you money. Gotta run, but you keep your imaginations burning bright.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Something new, something big

Last week I talked about not letting our crazy world drive you nuts, but there is so much work and goings on here this past week or so, that it has been absolutely crazy. Mostly in good ways. A number of our projects are coming together and soon to be revealed, but they are each a ton of work – even with wonderful and astute helpers. As always, there are unexpected complications to be dealt with. It’s those complications that have conspired to drive us up a wall. So yes, me, Sean, Wayne, and the rest of the crew are feeling rather strung out.

In an Update a couple weeks ago, My Closing Thoughts teased at things to come. Well, you’ll start seeing those things soon. We – but especially, Sean – have been working on secret projects that we hope will thrill you to no end. All are cool, but one is potentially, really big and something new for Palladium. That announcement will happen in a week or two. Being privy to it all, knowing the caliber of the people we’re working with, and the design work we are seeing, has made us downright giddy some days. It’s all very exciting.

So hang tight, enjoy the Free book with a purchase of $10 or more, let the new Superhero Sale save you money (inspired by Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 3rd), and game on.

Weekly Update

ONE GAME SYSTEM – EVERY GENRE – COUNTLESS WORLDS – ENDLESS ADVENTURE

BY KEVIN SIEMBIEDA

News & Updates – Palladium Books® – Weekly Update – April 25, 2025

Hello, everyone. Are you enjoying the arrival of spring? It seemed like it took long enough to get here, at least, in this part of the country. Ah, but we welcome its warmth and glowing arrival.

With spring here and summer conventions and gaming around the corner, we are seeing people getting antsy about new releases from Palladium Books. I think concerns about tariffs and possible price increases also give people cause for worry. So let me provide some updates and news. Also see my Closing Thoughts and spread the word about this update so your fellow gamers don’t miss this information. Oh, and join me and Sean for a live chat on Legion of Myth this Sunday. Thank you.

UPDATE: Pricing. Keeping the price of all our products reasonable remains a priority for us at Palladium Books. We are renowned for the low price point and high quality of our RPG products and intend to continue that 40+ year tradition as long as we can. I mentioned a few months ago, before tariffs, that the low prices of our hardcover books will be going up $4-$10 each over the course of the year, but even with that increase, the cost of Palladium hardcovers remains lower than most in the RPG industry. Though you may see some other price increases in the future, we are not currently anticipating any extreme price hikes; the prices of most Palladium RPG titles are unchanged.

UPDATE: No end to physical books. The word books is part of our name for a reason, so while some game companies may lean toward doing more digital products and fewer books, Palladium will be supporting both the digital and physical book markets. Over the next few years, you should be seeing more physical books from Palladium than you’ve seen in a long time. Sean and I are brimming with ideas for exciting new books and we have plenty of announced titles we need to catch up on first.

UPDATE: High quality always. Top quality art and writing are Palladium’s hallmarks and that will not change. We have Steven Cummings, Mike Majestic, and other top artists as well as Matthew Clements and other writers working on various projects. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux editions will give you a clear idea of what you can expect in the future regarding writing quality, artwork, layout, color and rules.

UPDATE: All Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux books and Kickstarter exclusives are at the printer. We’ve been dealing with the GPSR regulations of the EU – talk about overreaching and unfriendly for business – and other logistics regarding import, export and shipping. Updates to follow when we have more definitive information. Cannot wait to put these books in your hands.

UPDATE: Rifts® Bestiary Volume Two – coming in 2025. This is an example of why we have a policy of trying not to announce titles before they are in final layout or at the printer. Internally, we anticipated Bestiary Vol. 2 to be a spring release, but things changed. Additional writing and artwork are in the process of being completed right now.

UPDATE: Yin-Sloth Expeditions and Rifts® Antarctica. We expect both to be 2025 releases. I also hope to get to a few other titles before year end, but time will tell.

UPDATE: Long-awaited titles. You’ll see many titles (not all, some have been cancelled) you’ve been waiting for over the next few years. As we announced when Sean first joined Palladium, our plans include giving you the books you’ve been waiting for. Those plans have been delayed due to growing pains (all positive in the long run) and business and personal matters. Note: The Palladium website has a page that lists books that have been cancelled and the status of the titles that remain on the drawing board. Check it out.

A personal note: I want to humbly and sincerely apologize for being unable to work on books much these past 13 months. Besides dealing with business matters and planning, the unexpected loss of Kathy Simmons, my beloved life-partner of 20+ years, was devastating and it left me heartbroken and functioning at low capacity. Some days getting out of bed and going to work was a challenge. Being creative was not an option as I worked through my grief. That loss impacted all of us, as Kathy played a big role at Palladium. I hope you can understand.

That said, me, Sean, and the entire Palladium crew never stopped working behind the scenes to strengthen the company from the ground up. We’ve been planning and building new business relationships and putting various plans (and people) in place to make Palladium stronger and more resilient than ever before. And I’m happy to report the crew and I are all healing and feel incredibly positive about the future of Palladium. And the creative juices are flowing once again.

UPDATE: Palladium’s trajectory: You’ll begin to get a clearer picture of where Palladium Books is heading and what you can expect in the future when you see the TMNT & Other Strangeness books and Kickstarter exclusives, as well as when we reveal a few things in May and the months ahead. Just know that creating games, publishing RPG books, and you are what we love, and will be the focus of everything we do moving forward. We listen and hear you. We know what you want from us and it’s coming. I can’t say more without giving things away, but you’ll be pleased. Very pleased.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles of all kinds to my Ebay store every few weeks.

Don’t let the crazies get to you

It is a crazy world and crazy times. So much change and conflicting information online and in the media about tariffs, the economy, and everything to worry about.

I know, the past two weeks have been insane as we dealt with fun and exciting things and crazy, unexpected speedbumps like the GPSR requirements for selling and shipping products into the European Union, amongst all the other craziness in the world.

It can be so daunting and troubling. There were moments this week where I wanted to tear my hair out or scream. So many obligations. So many demands on our time. Don’t worry, we’re doing alright and figuring it all out. It’s just not easy some days.

I know if I’m feeling this way, you must be too. Don’t let the crazies and worry drive you crazy too. Don’t lose sight of all the good things at your disposal like: Good friends and family, good books, great RPGs, comic books, movies, streaming, beautiful spring weather, trees coming back to life, spring flowers blooming, spring sales blooming too, and all the good people, places and things in your life.

It’s so easy to lose sight of the good things in life when you’re bombarded by the media and friends and family with fear and concerns. Don’t let it overwhelm you. Focus on the positive and things you can change and push away the garbage that’s bringing you down. There is so much goodness and beauty. Be the light. Be the change you want to see. Find escape and solace in your favorite RPGs, books, films, friends, and family.

When you’re feeling low or frustrated (I know the feeling all too well), call a friend and talk it out. Go on a walk or read or do something fun and/or relaxing. Take a deep breath. Smell the flowers and game on. You have the power. Use it. Love ya all.

Weekly Update

BY KEVIN SIEMBIEDA

This is a great way to build your art print collection, spruce up your gaming den, or to have colorful references to delight your players. (“Coming out of the forest you see something like this!”) Most prints, the poker decks, and bookmarks are all on sale at half-price. Get ‘em while you can. Sale ends Wednesday, April 23.

NEWS!

20 Reprint titles are at the printer! Palladium has sent 20 titles in for reprint. Most should be available before we sell out of our current print run, but a few will be temporarily out of print for a few weeks to a few months.

– Powers Unlimited One will be back in print by the end of May.

– Rifts Book of Magic will be back in print by the end of May.

– The Rifts Cyberworks Hardcover will be back in print in May.

– The Rifts Ultimate Edition SOFTCOVER will be back in print in July.

What’s hot at Palladium this week? Besides art prints, we’ve seen a sudden surge for Heroes  Unlimited and After the Bomb® titles. Meanwhile, Rifts® (particularly RUE, the Rifts 30th Anniversary hardcover, World Books), Dead Reign® and Palladium Fantasy titles also remain hot. Thank you everyone. As I’ve said in the past, I find it interesting when we see a surge of one or more game lines when there is no obvious catalyst for it. Is it something in the zeitgeist? Is it a podcast discussion I don’t know about? Something Sean or I said in an interview? We never know but it’s fun to see.

More fun conversations. Last Sunday, I  had a spirited chat with the guys on the Glitterbois podcast. We talked about the backstory behind Nightbane®, Dead Reign®, and Systems Failure. It was a lot of fun and I was told the chat would be made live quickly, so it should be available this weekend or soon after. We’ll try to do another one in May.

April 27th will be the next Legion of Myth live chat with me and Sean.

J-M DeFoggi and I also continue making videos for the official history of Palladium Books. Each episode filled with stories about the creation of your favorite games and the people behind them. The people part means there will be episodes where we talk about Julius Rosenstein, Erick Wujcik, Keith Parkinson, and many others, as well as interviews with Sean Owen Roberson, Palladium staffers, and other notable Palladium writers, artists, and co-creators. Keep your eyes tuned into the Palladium YouTube channel.

COMING! Behind the scenes reveals. A couple of behind the scenes projects shall be revealed over the next few weeks. We shared the information with some friends and insiders and everyone has gotten very excited about them, so we think you will too.

ON WATCH! Personal appearances. As many of you know, we don’t do a lot of conventions, but here’s what’s coming up over the next 10 months:

Gen Con – July/August

Alliance Open House (Tradeshow) – September

Granite State Comic Con – September

I may add one plus I’m considering a January Convention.

Everything in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Redux project rewards are heading to the printers!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux and TMNT Transdimensional Adventures are done! That includes the four variant covers and the two impressive Black White & Red Editions. The final versions are all complete, and once approvals are finalized, they will be heading to the printers, probably this week. We’re one more step closer to getting these into your hands!

There is a ton of New and Expanded Content! We initially promised 256 pages in the core rule book, but thanks to your support and our dedicated team, we’ve expanded to 272 pages – that’s 16 pages of bonus content, in addition to a sleek new layout and typesetting, color artwork throughout, including TMNT comic strip, easy to read tables, a new index, there are 20 new mutant animals, new animal abilities, stats for Karai (new art by Kevin Eastman),  clarified and enhanced combat rules, 20 new vehicles, and more! That’s not counting the 15+ delightful, new, pinup pages of Tribute Art by comic book and gaming artists, wonderful written remembrances, the behind-the-scenes story about the making of the original RPG,  concept art and notes, and fun insights.

Get all the details and see more artwork in the newest Kickstarter Update by clicking the link below.

Likewise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Transdimensional Adventures – is a juicy 256 page sourcebook that combines the original content of Transdimensional TMNT with the TMNT Guide to the Universe, and TMNT Adventures – now remastered and expanded with the same level of new layout, colors, comic strips (20 pages total; originally created specifically for these sourcebooks), as the core rule book. It too offers rules clarifications and expanded contents such as Fugitoid’s Stats, expanded vehicle creation rules,  expanded vehicle combat rules, vehicle hit location and critical damage tables, tribute art,  more behind-the-scenes insights, and touching and funny written remembrances.

As final approvals come in, we are sending the books, Game Master screen, dice, miniature sets, poker deck, print sets, and all the rest to the printers.

Once again, our humblest and most sincere thanks to every single one of you for supporting this project. This project is truly a labor of love, and we cannot wait for you to dive into this expanded and remastered TMNT & Other Strangeness Redux content.   –  Sean Owen Roberson

Note: Anyone can still pre-order the mainstream books at Kickstarter prices – a saving of $5-$10 per book. So do it while you still can, because the Pre-Order Store will be closing in a few weeks.

If you have NOT yet filled out your BackerKit Registration survey (shipping address, etc.) please do so now so to guarantee you get your rewards! Thank you.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Sharing my life and friends with you

It’s strange and wonderful having touched so many people’s lives with my work in role-playing games. It means I have made millions of friends around the world through my work. It’s really nice when I get to actually meet those friends in person at Gen Con and other gaming events. And it has been nice sharing my life experiences and my friends with you via podcasts, live chats, and YouTube videos. Now conventions are starting to reach out and ask me to come and talk about the early days of the RPG industry and Palladium Books’s role in it. Cool.

I’ve had the great privilege to know and work with many amazing people. Which is why J-M DeFoggi and I are adding to the history of Palladium books chats about some of those amazing people like Erick Wujcik, Julius Rosenstein, Keith Parkinson, and many others.

It’s wonderful to remember these brilliant and eccentric people I love so much. Each one contributed to the legacy of Palladium Books whether it was mostly behind the scenes like Julius and Kathy, or in the spotlight like Erick and Keith. I love that I can keep their memories alive through these talks. But even the remembrances only scratch the surface of who these people were (or are). We are approaching them from a historical point of view with a focus on their contributions to Palladium and the gaming industry. But there’s so much more to each of them. There are all kinds of zany stories I could tell about Julius Rosenstein and our gaming adventures. Heck, I don’t even remember if I mentioned his main job at Palladium Books was running my warehouse and shipping. What a great guy and a joy to game with.

I’m writing this week’s Closing Thoughts after coming off a delightful time with the Glitterbois last Sunday (that interview should be available for your viewing enjoyment) and an hour before I chat with J-M about Erick Wujcik. I’m not even sure we can get all the historical game industry stories into one chat, let alone any of the personal tales I could tell. There are our countless midnight chats that would often last 4-5 hours, our many collaborations on games that Erick never finished, the many parties, or that Erick gave me one of the greatest gifts I ever received. No, it’s not a game or dice or even a piece of artwork. It was a ping pong table. Erick knew I enjoyed ping pong at the Detroit Gaming Center and he wanted me to find more time to relax and get some exercise at the same time. That thoughtful gift gave me and my father Hank thousands of hours of enjoyment for many years. My Dad and I got so good at ping pong we’d stand five feet from the table and a single game could take 30-45 minutes. There was a decade when my Dad and I played for an hour and a half (three sets), five or six days a week. That gift brought us so much joy and lasting memories. I had them engrave “ping pong god” on my Dad’s tombstone.

Erick Wujcik and I were closer than brothers. We loved each other deeply and unconditionally. We talked about everything under the sun. There were no secrets between us. It was an epic friendship on a personal and creative level the depth of which I have only ever known with three other people among my army of friends. So, I’m thrilled to give you a little glimpse into some of these beautiful human beings who quietly helped shape me and Palladium Books over the years.

J-M and I have taped something like a year and a half worth of YouTube chats (one posted every other week), and continue to do more, so I don’t know when these “people episodes” will appear. Whether we’ll slot them in here and there, or whether they’ll come out after we cover the history of the game lines, or what, but they’re coming and they’re worth watching. Oh, and we’ll also be slotting in chats with other Palladium Creators. Fan fave artist, Ramon K. Perez is coming May 8th and there will be conversations with Sean Owen Roberson, Alex Marciniszyn, Wayne Smith (if we can get him in front of a camera), Matthew Balent, John Zeleznik, Freddie E. Williams, and hopefully many others. Okay, enough of my ramblings.

Enjoy the art print sale before it ends on Wednesday. There is a lot of dynamic art for you to make your selections. Each one a fond memory for many of you.

We continue to pound away on a zillion things (including finishing new releases) to make Palladium stronger than ever, and to bring you gaming fun you’ll remember forever. To those of you who celebrate it, Happy Easter.  Don’t eat too many chocolate rabbits and Peeps. Ho, ho, ho! (Ooops, wrong holiday.)

What’s hot at Palladium this week? Hmm, it’s been a little bit of everything: Rifts®, Palladium Fantasy, After the Bomb®, Nightbane®, and, of course, sale items. But the hottest seller this week has been the Dead Reign RPG® series – the zombie apocalypse Palladium style! It is a great introductory game for new players (After the Bomb is too) and lots of fun. One gamer bought every book in the series, others have picked up DR sourcebooks, and a number of core-rule books (hardcover and softcover) have blown out the door. We have also seen distributors place a number of orders this week. Awesome! I’m so glad people are discovering this compelling and fun setting. Thank you everyone.

For clues to things to come, take a look at Closing Thoughts. I hope you find it entertaining.

Last Sunday’s chat went great and was a lot of fun. We spent an hour talking about the status of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Kickstarter (most everything has been approved and should be heading for the printer and manufacturing soon), so that topic may be broken out into a separate interview. Then we talked about using Palladium rules as a framework for any setting and kit-bashing two (or more) games/settings like Beyond the Supernatural and Rifts into a unique world/dimension of its own. That’s the beauty of Palladium’s Megaversal game system,  you can bring any character, monsters, weapon, magic, etc., from one world setting into another with ease. The spirited conversation was a blast. Check it out. Note: Our next chat with the Legion will be at the end of April.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles of all kinds to my Ebay store every few weeks.

Hints of things to come

We have mentioned there are many exciting things building behind the scenes at Palladium. That prompts the question: what can we reveal? Honestly, not much without angering Sean. We try not to announce books until they are heading to the printer. Nor do we announce events, crowdfunding, and reveals until they are coming soon. Still, I thought it might be fun to offer clues to what you can expect throughout the year. I hope you find this silliness to be fun. Remember, I’m a goofball and Palladium Books is a silly place.

– A jazzy new interface.

– More sounds of adventure.

– More chats and new faces.

– More monstrous fun.

– Explore the Verdant Green.

– To the rescue.

– A couple books get a facelift.

– The Palladium staff grows a tad.

– A potential new source for Rifts adventure.

– Turtles come out to play when it gets warm.

– A land of ice and unexpected magic and an ancient enemy of the Splugorth.

– Indianapolis summer gathering.

– September gathering near the birthplace of the Ninja Turtles.

– Humans have always been their prey. That hasn’t changed.

– The mystic arts are a subtle craft known to but a few.

– Santa comes to town.

The answers should become apparent with each event or product release. Until then, enjoy Palladium’s annual print sale (50% off) and refresh your gaming space with new art or add to your collection. Oh, and dust off your favorite RPG, purchase a few world books or sourcebooks for inspiration, and game away your troubles and worries.

Update! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux

We are excited to share that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Redux project rewards are heading to the printers!

Get all the details and see more artwork in the newest Kickstarter Update by clicking the button below.

IMPORTANT ALERT: BackerKit Pledge Adjustments Now Unlocked!

The pledge adjustment feature in BackerKit has been UNLOCKED, and you can now make changes to your pledge FOR ONE WEEK ONLY. Whether you’re looking to add more items or adjust your current Kickstarter Pledge Level selection, the system is now fully operational. But just for one week, because we need to send FINAL numbers of these Kickstarter Backer Exclusives to the manufacturers as soon as possible! The Kickstarter Backer Exclusives will only be available through the night of April 10, 2025, and no longer available after that date.

Exclusive Add-Ons ONE WEEK ONLY

For one week only, these campaign exclusives are available to our Kickstarter Backers. Add them to your pledges while you can. For example, the two Mutagen Green Foil Editions sport brand new artwork by Kevin Eastman AND Peter Laird created specially for these two collector’s editions. A rare and triumphant collaboration by the two legendary Ninja Turtle creators that TMNT super-fans will desire for years to come – if they can even find one on the secondary collector’s market – because they will be so limited and rare! But Backers can still order them until April 10, 2025:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux – Kevin Eastman variant color cover featuring the TMNT, Shredder, and the Foot Clan.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Transdimensional Adventures Redux – Sophie Campbell variant color cover featuring the TMNT and dinosaurs.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Redux Miniature Set: Heroes

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness RPG Redux Mutagen Green Foil Cover – new cover art by Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird

  • TMNT Transdimensional Adventures Redux Mutagen Green Foil Cover – new cover art by Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird

To get the Mutagen Green variant covers the Backer must Pledge at a Level that offers these variant foil covers. That starts at the Mutagen Mystic pledge level and higher. However, even at the minimum threshold of Mutagen Mystic you can ADD as many additional copies as you can afford.

The print sets! These are available ONLY in specific pledge levels and are not available as individual add-ons. If you really want one or all of the print sets, you need to pledge accordingly.

Don’t miss this limited opportunity to secure these exclusive items! We will be locking them down on April 10, 2025.

Kevin Siembieda and Sean Owen Roberson on Legion of Myth.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Thoughts on creating RPG adventures

Sean, Matthew, and I are busy working on various books and reviewing various manuscripts from freelance writers. In addition, several of the most recent chats on Legion of Myth and Palladium’s YouTube interviews (you won’t see them for months) have dealt with creating and running RPG adventures. All of which has prompted me to write this little discussion about creating game material for your personal RPG campaign or for publication.

Being creative and weaving coherent and compelling stories can be tricky business. It doesn’t make much difference whether you are writing a professional RPG book or an adventure for yourself and your friends, because the same basic principles apply to both. Sean and I often say things like: Think big, unleash your imagination, think outside the box, have fun with it, write for your audience, and trust your gut,  but what does any of that actually mean?

Think big: This doesn’t necessarily mean something massive in scale and scope that’s a zillion pages or super-powerful. It means don’t limit your thinking on any subject. Consider your many options and then explore them in depth. Try to consider all the possibilities, and then ask yourself, what if I took it to the next level? And then, what’s the level after that? Heck, shoot for the sky. No, the moon. No, Mars! No, the next galaxy! Get the idea?

Unleash your imagination: This may sound like it’s the same as Think Big, and they do go hand in hand, but they are different. It means don’t inflict yourself with self-imposed boundaries and limitations. Look at everything as a fun challenge. Explore all the possibilities from every angle and various degrees, and then consider the impossible! Erick and I – and now Sean and I – cut loose and go wild when spitballing ideas. We let the ideas fly unchecked. Nothing is too crazy or too outlandish at this stage. Everything is an exploration of ideas. What if … is a constant refrain along with or how about …? Nothing is off the table, because we can rein it all in, edit, and throw away ideas that don’t work, later. Now is the time to explore ideas in a big way and consider their infinite possibilities. Sometimes the ideas fly so fast and furious, and the adrenaline is so high, that we feel exhausted when we’re done. We keep the best idea(s), file away other cool ideas for possible future use, and get about developing and finetuning the ideas we keep. It’s nice to have a person with whom you can bounce off ideas and get strong feedback, but this process works on  your own too.

Think outside the box: Once you have your grand idea, this is where you challenge yourself to make it more interesting or to feel new, exciting, different, unexpected, and fun. That last word, fun, is where write for your audience comes into play, because you need to be asking yourself what will be fun and exciting for your audience. By the way, challenge yourself to make even the small ideas and little things interesting and fun.

Have fun with it! Challenge yourself as a writer to create dynamic settings, lore, villains, character classes,  and, well, everything! Even the most basic and mundane characters and concepts need some flourish and context to make them feel unique and important. Personally, I love taking the familiar and giving it a twist that will surprise and please the audience. For example, I once had someone say to me, “Kevin, zombies are just animated dead, how much can you write about them?” If you take a look at the Dead Reign RPG, you’ll see there is quite a bit you can write about them.

That was one of the fun challenges of Dead Reign, how to capture the most interesting and popular tropes for such creatures and make the zombies feel unique, fun, and terrifying. The terrifying is not just the description and art for each different type of zombie, but is also built into many of the game mechanics like the zombie moan and the convergence, amongst others. I don’t look at any of this as a problem or a chore, but as a fun creative opportunity.

Two other challenges with Dead Reign were the tone and presentation of the material in the book. I chose to present it from the viewpoint of Brad Ashley, a legendary zombie fighter who has written, printed, and distributed (as best he can) a survival guide for others trying to survive in this dangerous world.. This paints the RPG as a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide,  which makes it more fun, compelling, and hopeful. Hopeful, because Brad is a survivor offering tips to people (the players) on how they can also survive and fight zombies.

An Insider fun tactic. I sometimes drop little fun things or inside jokes into some of my books. In the case of Dead Reign, Brad Ashley’s name is a composite of the two main artists, Nick Bradshaw and Amy L. Ashbaugh. The Timrek giant frog monster in Monsters & Animals is Kermit spelled backwards. I also like to name secondary and background characters, locations, taverns, and shops after friends, family, and Palladium fans. There’s a ton of the latter in the two Rifts Northern Gun books, and island of Wuj, in Palladium Fantasy, is a nod to Erick Wujcik. Rifts Heroes of the Megaverse has 7-8 NPC  cosmic heroes inspired by real life loved ones including Erick, Julius, Kathy, Alex, etc., and a couple of fans. I write games and game sourcebooks, and games are supposed to be fun, joyful experiences for the end user, but they should also be fun for the creator.

Write for your audience: Which means not only do you need to know and understand your audience, but what they want. And then give it to them. You need to know what gets role-players excited and gives them the thrill ride they’re looking for. I find that it helps if YOU are a member of your audience. Meaning if you’re writing an RPG or sourcebook that you are a gamer and fan of the genre/setting/characters you’re writing.  As a fan, you know what you love about it and that’s probably reflective of your audience. However, we all have our biases, so you need to think about your audience and not just your own likes and dislikes. I’m always thinking about what gamers would get excited about.

Of course, when you write role-playing games and sourcebooks, you are actually writing for two audiences, the Game Master and the players. G.M.s want meat: cool villains and monsters, exciting plot hooks and lore, and a strong setting from which they build adventures for the players. Players want weapons, gadgets, magic, powers, and challenges that make their characters better – faster, powerful, and more experienced – all wrapped in a fun and  memorable experience.

Trust your gut. It’s easy to overthink and analyze your creation. At some point  you need to trust yourself that you’re doing a good job at delivering all of the above. Yes, you want to be self-critical, learn and improve, but  you also need to know, or feel, when it is fun and works. I’m constantly role-playing inside my head as I’m creating. I imagine what my game group and notable past players would like or dislike; what they would love to encounter, fight, and defeat.  I know what they consider exciting and fun. Likewise, when I’m creating a new power, spell, weapon, etc.,  I imagine how my power-gaming and rules lawyer pals would abuse or try to break it, and I rewrite it to prevent such unintended outcomes.

Oh, and … research, research, research! 90% of everything is research. Research is easier than ever with Google and A.I. assistance these days. Research everything! It will give you ideas about all kinds of things: animal biology and behavior to inspire monsters and alien creatures, history that inspires adventures, myths and legends to inspire spells, powers, characters, skills, and more monsters, and on, and on. Let everything light up your imagination.

There are other details and considerations in making and running a good game, but I hope the above helps you to get started and move forward. To me, role-playing games are the ultimate experience in cooperative gaming and storytelling. There’s nothing else like it. So, unleash your imaginations, have fun, and game on.

Sean is back and we are kicking everything into high gear. We’ll talk a bit about the latest at Palladium and answer some questions, but the subject of this Sunday’s chat is using Palladium rules as a framework for any setting and kit-bashing two (or more) games/settings like Nightbane and Palladium Fantasy into something truly unique. Which is so fun. Spread the word and join the conversation.

Glitterbois Chats are back starting April

More Glitterbois Chats with Kevin Siembieda are starting up again in April. Keep your

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness Kickstarter Backers

You, and you alone, can still add to your selection of Kickstarter Exclusives and upgrade to higher pledge levels to get limited edition exclusives. But you must do so soon, before the Pledge Manager is closed! The Kickstarter Exclusives are freakin’ awesome and many are super-limited, especially the variant covers. For example, the two Mutagen Green Editions sport brand new artwork by Kevin Eastman AND Peter Laird created specially for these two collector’s editions. A rare and triumphant collaboration by the two legendary Ninja Turtle creators that TMNT super-fans will desire for years to come – if they can even find one on the secondary collector’s market – because they will be so limited and rare! But Backers can still order them for another few weeks. Backers, use your unique position and do NOT miss out on what are certain to become high-priced collector items. You’ll be glad you did whether they become a cherished part of your collection or you sell them later for a profit. Also remember, the exclusive print sets and poker deck are only available for the higher pledge tiers.

Palladium Collectibles – at Kevin’s Online Toy & Collectibles eBay Store

I am adding new collectibles of all kinds to my Ebay store every few weeks.

You are not alone

I talk with many people of all ages and every walk of life. It disturbs me that so many feel lost and afraid, especially those who despair and fear for the future of our world. Please don’t despair. I promise you the human spirit is more resilient and stronger than you imagine. The majority of people I see are good and caring. Please don’t let political rhetoric, greed, and fear-mongering isolate you or make you fret. Though the media might suggest otherwise, the good outweighs the bad and the ugly, especially if you, yourself, seek out beauty and joy.

Here’s a secret: You, yes you, hold the power to change the world. I mean it. Do so by example. By being the change you want to see.

Be the light. Be the kinder, better, more caring person you wish for the world. Wear a smile, be empathetic, be patient and just. Win one person over at a time by your good example. You can make a difference by striving to be the best you can be. You don’t have to get up on a soapbox, preach, protest, or say a word. All you need to do is be your best you and try to be appreciative, respectful and empathetic toward others. Kindness and compassion are contagious and breed reciprocal positivity.

Does that sound too simple or naive? It’s not. We and the world around us are what we make them. I knew a woman who transformed her Michigan backyard into a tropical paradise every spring and brought boundless joy to thousands of children and adults throughout the month of October. She did it by being true to herself and letting her light shine via quiet acts of kindness and generous creativity. This one, unassuming person touched and inspired friends, family, and complete strangers with simple words and actions that made the people around her feel seen and appreciated. She gifted them with joyful moments they’ll carry always.

She wasn’t a politician, educator, doctor, or inventor. In fact, she would have told you that she was nobody. At least not anybody important. And yet, there’s an army of people to whom she was very important.

I speak of Kathy Simmons, who passed away one year ago. No matter how grim or dire her situation – and she had plenty of them throughout her life – she found a way to laugh and survive without harming a soul. Mom, Dad, Erick Wujcik, and Julius Rosenstein were the same way. They never let hardship crush their spirit. Somehow, they always managed to find and embrace joy in life’s simplest pleasures no matter how dark or threatening the storm clouds.

Kathy and these other amazing “nobodies” – who were everything to me – taught me how to live, love, hold joy and laughter in my heart, and keep going no matter what. I use my memories of them and lessons learned through their example to fuel the courage to try to be my best self.

If we can do it, you can do it too. I know you can. Please don’t let the stress of life and the pettiness, cruelty, and unfairness that can sometimes accompany it, dampen your spirit and take away your joy. Hold close to you the people and things that bring you happiness. Never let anyone convince you that they aren’t important. Never believe the things that light up your imagination and bring you joy and camaraderie are stupid and worthless. Lose yourself in those stupid games that make you laugh and your heart sing. Hold on to the precious friends and the memories of wondrous adventures they have brought into your life.

And never forget that you are not nobody. Know that you are, indeed, special and important in the universe. Which is how one person can make a profound difference, whether that difference affects a single soul or millions.
