You know Alaska would have many fjords like Norway with the oceans having risen.

Look at a map of it. Now just imagine the coastal waters pushed in from the coast. It would have even more inlets.

So therefore the water front property in Alaska would be a pretty extensive and worthwhile realestate up there.

That would be a long way to go just to dump prisoners. Maybe. Unless they were sure that they wouldn't coming back. Like dumping them out naked in the middle of a blizzard.

LOL I wish it were that simple. If one thing would turn around for us would do a world of good for me.

That might be an interesting idea. I suppose we could come up with the pantheon and after we do that we make sure that the pantheon's home has a permanent rift to Alaska. And it's unable to be cut off. That this protal was active even during the times before the coming of the Rifts. They could send theior astral selves to earth and effect the area. But that can't effect the land beyond the arctic.

And you add some manufacturing facilities for any bases up there. Making sure that those same manufacturing facilities have access to resources. And you have some self sustaining bases deep in the heart of the Alaskan frontier.

I think the facilities would be deep multiple level. Capable of supporting a large contingent of troops and scienctist. Sort on the level of Lone Star.

A few things to bear in mind when it comes to the coming of the rifts. Despite the fact the right now most of the population is near the coast, in the future (2098 A.D.) most the larger population would live inwards away from the coast. Living in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (near the Knik Glacier really) for things such as tidal-waves would probably not make it very far inland due to the fact that there are mountaion ranges literally next to the city of Anchorage. That wall of water would have to go over the Chugach mountain range and that goes onto other ranges for a little over 300 miles and have mountains that reach over a mile in height.

Anchorage, Eagle-River and Palmer, plus any other town that had developed since then would be hit and mostly destroyed with exception to hardened and underground structures, even then however most people who live in Palmer and around there live on high elevations (Palmer is a 100+ feet over sea-level and is 42 miles away form Anchorage).

The Kenai Peninsula will also be wiped out since it is almost all coast area. The mountains that are there are not big enough nor take up enough area to really stop the waves, merely direct them. Most of todays communities in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area will also be wiped out except for those behind the mountains in the area. The Fairbanks North Star Borough would most likley be able to survive the ocean but there is weather and earthquakes to consider. Fort Wainwright is home to the 25th infantry Division and you also have Eielson AFB which is home to the 354th Fighter Wing which is part of the Eleventh Air Force (11 AF) of Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). I don't quite remember but I believe that the Fox area also has Nuclear Missile Launch facilities too. Fort Greely is also about 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks and tests missile and anti-missile systems in extreme cold, and was selected as a site for the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system. As for super-weapons, we have lots of bases out in the middle of nowhere...time will tell.

I believe when the Rifts come it won't be the water that kills most of the population but Earthquakes, the suddenly extreme weather and Volcanos. Alaska (south Alaska mostly) is next to the "Juan de fuca" tectonic plate and is part of the Ring of Fire. Most of northern Alaska will not be as badly affected, but with Earthquakes 10+ on the Richter scale, Winter going from the usual snowy and sometime really cold (-20 degrees) to huge blizzards and Extreme Cold, and all of the Volcanoes spewing out tons of ash (which only adds to the cold) and in some cases lava it will definantly reshape the landscape.

Worst case is that Alaska won't be dead, just severley beaten...if it were today. 2098, who knows what Alaska would have by then. My two cents for now. :)

I think your observations are awesome. We can always use them to help round out the overall view of Alaska. Please keep adding more! We'll take every suggestion we can get. I'm hoping that the active mechanisms against earthquakes will continue to develope as time goes on. I think most military bases would be upgraded with the sesmic shock absorbers that they have developed over the years. Added to the building it might be able to reduce the overall damage it might take. I think that there will be devices which will allow some some of the hardened military buildings to survive even the coming of the Rifts in this raw landscape.

Thank you for the complement Aramanthus. here's a few more notes.

I've done some looking into some information I wasn't clear on my last post and am adding new information and opening new options with some of them.

In regards to the Military, Alaska is a site of great strategic importance to the Department of Defense from World War II through the Cold War and into present times. There are approximately 700 formerly used defense sites in Alaska, many in close proximity to Alaska Native communities and traditional fishing and hunting grounds and waters. Alaska has been used as an experimental testing ground for the military’s nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare programs. Weapons testing ranges encompass an area approximately the size of the state of Kansas. Alaska is perceived as “remote,” with small populations of isolated communities that lack the political clout to resist the intrusions. On the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission detonated three nuclear blasts between 1965 and 1971, including the world’s largest underground nuclear test, the 5 megaton Cannikin test. At Fort Greely in Interior Alaska, the Army operated a nuclear reactor to make weapons-grade nuclear materials. The Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line stations, built to detect missiles and bombers heading toward North America, included 63 military radar stations along the 66th parallel across Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.

Basically, Alaska has always been the eyes on the back of the head in regards to threats in the pacific and from China, Japan, and of course Russia. It is also a place in the world where one can go to at least 4 continents (5 if you fly over the north ice cap), thus allowing a fast military response almost anywhere in the world. Also, there are in fact nuclear launch sites in the Fox area as well as in Kodiak and Ketchikan, these are all within a short distance of a military base. There are currently four naval bases (two are near the nuclear launch sites) and I believe five Coast guard bases. wheather these naval bases can dock and maintain submarines is unknown to me but I'm sure they could since a Nimitz class carrier can dock in one of those naval ports. On Elmendorf AFB is a large white building that is known as R.O.C.C. (not sure but I believe it means Regional Operations Control Center) which is supposed to be the Alaskan version of NORAD as is it keeps track of the airspace over Canada, the North Pacific, the Artic ocean and a little into Russian airspace. From what little I do know it is also capable of surviving Conventional and Nuclear Attacks.

In 2098 the primary Military force, NEMA, covers all branches of the military along with a few possible branches that may exist that are not listed. the advent of Robots and Powerarmor created new specialty training and enhanced the abilities of combat units, rescue units and many others such as the corp of engineers. Alaska's extreme environment would be extensivley used to test out machinery and the units themsleves for effectivness in said situation, this will become importaint after the coming of the Rifts when these people are the only ones capable of operating in such dangerous conditions. There is also an option for Rifts: Space to come into play as Fairbanks (Eielson AFB specifically) is location #5 for the space shuttle to land (#3 if landing is considered a priority). It puts many things into play such as a possible place for space launch facilities, this also puts into play the use for espionage and the moving of troops from one place to another in a short period of time. The transport of troops could by 2098 easily be by use of rocket launched trans-atmospheric aircraft that can go from one location to another in only a few hours or less and placed there by either landing said aircraft or doing HALO jumps as we know now or somthing simular to starship troopers (book goes with a drop pod while the movie uses drop shuttles). This could also include powerarmored troopers, autonomous robots platoons, vehicle transport(and airdrops) which could easily make Alaska become a fortified state and thus making neccesary the creating of many military bases for use of such facilites and of course for the protection of the resources and population centers that those future resource excavations had created.

With future developments of technology coming into play, and the idea of these things existing in Alaska by 2098, technologies into improving safety will be necessary in order for such a large population base to exist in such a region. Since Railguns are considered commonplace in the military down to even infantry class railguns it comes into question wheather the technology had been expanded into other areas. In fiction such as Mobile Suit Gundam, the RX-78 Gundam was later upgraded with Magnetic joints to cause less friction and allow the machine to match the reaction time of Amuro (it was faster but still not enough to match him in reaction time). I believe that Electromagnets could be used the way earthquake proof buildings are made today, only instead of a spring the building floats on air while kept in place at the same time. This would require many powerful magnets and a large powersource to make them all work, and they would also have to be shielded in such a way that it would not interfere with machines and instruments the use the earths magnetic field, but also not to screw with people on body fuctions or that of the wildlife (such as birds).

That's all I have for now, I'll have more as I think on it.

Uh, GundamChief. Maybe you should write all this up and send it in to see if Pal. would be interested in having you work with someone to write a world book.

Well, I just threw my guns down, walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.”
