Military vehicles tend to be named around a theme. In this case you have three similar machines (Bulldog, Mastiff, and Big Dog/Super Mastiff) named for big, mean dogs. The next few NEMA robots we see may have an entirely different theme.
There you go man, keep as cool as you can.
Face piles of trials with smiles. It riles
them to believe that you perceive the web they weave
and keep on thinking free.

Fighter Jets - Birds of prey: Eagle, Falcon, Raptor

Combat Choppers - Indian Tribes: Iroquois, Apache, Commanche

Tanks: American Generals - Sherman, Patton, Abrahams (though they got that trick from the British in WW2, the Americans usd to number gear, never name it, but when the American's sent tanks to the British the Brits, who used name designatiosn rather than numbers gave the tanks names, mostly US Civil War generals (Sherman, Grant, Lee) and a tradition was born)

I might have something to do with a quote from The Bard W.S. "..Let slip the hounds of War..."

And the failed (NEMA robot) prototypes get names like 'Spot', 'Fluffy', 'Fuzzy', 'Mutt', 'Mongrel', and 'Blackie'?

Believe it or not, in Rifts: Manhunter there was a MUTT robot vehicle.

In all seriousness, I can see NEMA troops giving their individual machines pet names.

The Soviet Union named their self propelled artillery after flowers.

How about a list of things you SHOULDN'T name robots after...

Like certain automobiles...

Edsel
Pinto
Nova(especially with the fusion reactor safety suspect)

And introducing the General Robotics 'GreaseSpot'!

Only the robot vehicles are named after dogs. The others are power armor.

Giving the robots more familiar names tends to give a more positive theme to them. Rather than go "looke everyone the x193edr are going to fight the evil creatures" just does not have the same psychological impact as saying "look everyone the mastiffs are going into combat". Plus it' rolls off the tongue easier.
If it's stupid and it works. It's not stupid

Palladium can't be given a free pass for criticism because people have a lot of emotion invested in it.

Pathfinder is good. It is not the second coming of D&D.

Surshot is absolutely right. (Kevin Seimbeda)

Palladium ISN'T the military (just read SoT for that evidence  ), so while they tend to follow a theme, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll stick to it.

Or, as already pointed out, the Gunbuster, CG, and SE aren't robots... they're power armor.
