the 10 Best US states for Seft Havens..

You are on your own. The Army is MIA and our government is gone! There are no communications of any kind. Cities and towns have gone dark, and zombies fill the streets. The dead have risen and it would seem to be the end of the world. Help me, Mommy!

I thought of a good one last night (except during hurricane season). The Outer Banks, North Carolina. Only 2 bridges connecting the entire chain of islands to the main land. 2 Land bridges. Easily blocked. Then spend a few months cleaning off the islands, using the road and/or boat. Mind you if DR zombies can swim then throw this idea out, otherwise it would be my winter home and summer in the mountains of the west end of the state. Mountains steep enough in a lot of places to make a human difficult to get up, let alone a zombie.

Minnesota would be one of the best states due to the long winters. The cold weather would make zombies very slow.

California, New York, Virginia and Maryland would be very bad due to very high population centers meaning literally millions of zombies roaming about.

If not North Caroline and the Outer Banks then Virgina and Tanger Island. Hours accessable by boat and plain only, no cars, and under 100 people. Has a fishing lively hood and the island could be used for water raids on all the areas around it. You can access the heard of Norfolk by boat and be back out and safe, fast.

Every state has its isolated areas. It just depends on how surrounded you are and what escape routes are available.

Well the one advantage to DR is if the zombies run out of targets they shut down, they dont keep walking and walking and walking. So if you were to clean out an isolated place or location, then you should be able to live in peace (providing you dont throw raves or have world war recreations for fights).

They do, however, have only a percentage "in stasis" at a time. Some do actually wander about looking for food.

Low population, plentiful game and fish, abandoned mines, surrounded by water on three sides.

Lower Minnesota has all of that except for the water on three side, although we have 10,000 lakes. ;)

Well long as its a few wandering and not a herd, then you could deal with it hopefully.

Isn't it just!

Would be a good reference tool for a gm running any Zombie game set in a current day or even near future/past campaign. You or the players pick a small town to start the campaign in. You then have a list of materials (gun shops, hospitals, hardware stores...) and where to find them. And then when the party ignore your plot line and take off on a tangent to go to the next town/county to check out the supply situation there, you can tell them what they find. And obviously, you can work out how heavily the town is 'zombiefied', using the MotD.

The UP doesn't get the snow like it did, so it would be better than you think. Southern MN might work, though you're stuck along I90, I35, various US highways, and the various southern cities. Worth a shot though.

Realistically, I would much rather modify a river boat and travel up and down the Mississippi with the seasons, keeping fields near the river, have a few fortified docking areas to use as hopping off points for salvage and resupply missions.

Alberta, Canada. Lots of forest and mountain ranges nearby. I would probably head for the Rocky Mountains.

If I had to guess ten states it would be these.

Alaska, Montana, Washington, Idaho, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Oregon, Main, Wisconsin.

Mainly chosen for their high Latitudes where cold winters can give an edge against the undead.

Considering that I run a campaign for 8 players, I have to keep on top of what they have access to and how they may use. It makes me generate ideas of my own based on what is available.

Valid point right here. In a zombie apocalypse, it is not really the zombies that are the largest danger. What you really have to worry about is other people who are driven to desperate measures by their lack of everything.

I would think that Florida would be bad for just the smell and chance of disease caused by the quickly rotting corpses (due to heat which increases putrifaction) walking about.

only one road in and thats across a ferry.. Just need to clear out any Zombies still inhabiting the place.. It's pretty much cut off from the mainland should be a good place to make into a safe Haven. It's got an Airport.. Lots of Boats you can use along with Shops to repair them.. Fishing Companies so Boats for a food source. It stretches 10 miles by about 10 miles.. Small country fishing town..Has 2 Medical centers.. Gonna call them up to see if they have any construction businesses on the island. These is a hardware store.

I just realized although it's a nice lacale that means lots of Mainers thought so as well.. making that island overrun.. But If you can clear it out or find someone to share it with.. It's a good spot.

I called the Island today and they said that there are 3 Construction sites on the island so Making a Fence of some sort should be easy.. I thought there was a Ferry but they have 1 road entering the island. The person I talked with on the phone said it would be easy to barricade the road into the island. So any of the islands off of Maine and Novascotia would be good spots.

only one road in and thats across a ferry..

And far enough north to not have to deal with hurricanes on any regular basis . If you can keep stephen king from writeing up additional horrors for the place it would be a nice safe haven . And gives the usual zombie story a nice air to it .

I live in New Hampshire and I actually see Steven King from time to time.. He likes coming to my town because no one bothers him here.

The greatest long term challenge will be food production and clean water. There's a surprisingly limited amount of food kept on hand in our industrialized society, and survivors will immediately raid any obvious location it was stored. I'd go for any region with lower population, good growing seasons, and ample water.

No desert regions.
No regions of regular intense snowfall (though that's an advantage the first year or two).

If your campaign keeps in mind the last few years of American politics, some events happened that led to the greatest hoarding of weapons and munitions ever in history (this may vary with your specific location). There should be no lack of firearms and ammo being traded amongst survivors. Medical supplies, heirloom seeds, farming skills and the like will be what quickly becomes high in demand. The last century worth of buildings are dependent on cheap and plentiful energy and water as well. So skills and materials for building more efficient homes/communities in defensible locations will be vital in the long run.

I think my favorite region would be the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Far from the heavy population centers, mild climate, ample water and farmland. Still a decent road network for traveling. There are a lot of regions in the Southeast US that would also be feasible to build defendable farms and communities.

I must admit, I've given up on playing long running apocalypse games, cause the real threat becomes things that are boring to role-play. Only the short term dashes of the initial outbreak and panic make for real good adventure. Once everyone comes to grips with the fact that they're fighting zombies and the initial panic settles, it's just not the right atmosphere of high adventure that I prefer.

As I stated in 2 other threads.. I live in a small tourist town that is full of Hunters.. There is a gun or 2 in every other house here.. A shooting range with 1500 members.. Hunting stores.. Gunsmiths.. And just people who like to collect weapons.. guns and bladed alike..

I think a Zombie outbreak here would look alot like the end of the Mother of zombie films "Night of the Living Dead."

I would like to find a way to have my town overrun.. But I just cant think of anything.. The so called myth in the book about bites not spreading the plague is looking pretty good.. Actualy.. I'm thinkin of 28 days later where any body fluid into your system will turn you. To really impact my community it needs to be a more high risk. The wave of inoculations.. Well If most people took it.. I guess but as for s shortage of weapons.. not realistic.

Too much snow and no snowplows would nix this one for me.

Low population, plentiful game and fish, abandoned mines, surrounded by water on three sides.

:)

And if its like the rest of Mich. and Wis. there are more than a few snowmobiles around . The long cold winters would slow them down and make them easier kills . And isnt there a large state park there ?

I live in lower Minnesota. Mostly farm country around here. We don't get nearly the amount of snow the rest of the state gets, plenty of snowmobiles and gets plenty cold enough to slow zombies.
*Sniff, Sniff* Why does it smell like wet dog in here?!
