Looking for a few suggestions. My wife and I will be attending the POH. My wife is familiar with roleplaying (DnD and maybe Whitewolf) but unfamiliar with Palladium books.
What books would ya'll suggest she read and/or skim to better familiarize herself? I have a pretty complete collection of the Megaverse. I gave her an old RMB to read. I didn't know if that was GED (good enough dude). I'm reading the RUE and I think that might be too much info for her to digest before the POH. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Peace,

Are the rules really that different in RUE? I don't honestly know.

What games interest her, play to what she gravitates to. Give her a brief run down of the different ones Rifts/Chaos Earth, Heros, Fantasy, Robotech, and BTS/Nightbane/Dead Reign. Have her browse the setting stuff, a brief skim of the general rules in any of the books is more than enough, any more will get dull. Since she has a basic familiarity with gaming, the rules stuff will be easily picked up in game.

Most, if not all GM's at the OH are pros and will gladly welcome new players. She is welcome at any of my games, rules and system always taught and we have a pretty good time.

I think she has a good handle on the settings. I am looking to help her prepare for the rules in general. Also magic and psionics without making it too complex. Thanks for your suggestions.

Awesome, sounds like she is ahead of the curve! As far as magic and psionics go, don't worry about specific spells and powers, just how to use them. The other thing I thought of after my first post was, slang and abbreviations often throw new players to the system. Basic attributes, game specific slang (especially Rifts) and abbreviations are often a real head scratchers for new players.

I'd say as long as she has a basic grasp on magic, psionics, how combat runs, skill use, and what everything on the character sheets are for then she should be better than fine.

Have her read the example of combat in RUE. That will be a great place to start. Most of the story telling in the oneshots at the open house is pretty fluid. I gladly welcome new gamers.

I've found that Dead Reign probably has the lowest learning curve. Zombies bad. Kill zombies. Run from zombies. Requires little knowledge of the system to figure how you want to shoot something in the head.

I think she prefers to use her own brains rather than have to brain others.

Oh? BTS2 or 1? I think any system in the Megaverse can be played like that.

BTS (either edition) games tend to be more cerebral than other games in the Megaverse, that is until Gideon draws his .454 Casull and then the cerebral side kinda goes away.

I think that is GM dependent.

truth. As for GM's at the open house, you will be hard pressed to find one better than Reelman aka Jim Brown.

For the record I think we both (wife n I) would enjoy a good BTS game at the POH though I'm not sure if we'll fit it in. She is a pretty big Dr. Who & Star Trek fan so I think it will be Phaseworld with a little bit of everything else on the side. We both enjoy the occult. I used to play Cthulu a bit and loved to read Clive Barker. BTS just might happen the more I type about it.

Of course, sorry, just noting the tendency of how BTS usually runs and the players it tends to attract at Cons, I will step aside with my suggestions now.

I appreciate the suggestions. I just don't know what we'll have time for. Or who is running what games. I meant no offense. I posted above in a recent post that we probably will try to get 1 game of BTS in if we can. I got the original BTS for my 12th Birthday along with Heroes and Turtles. I have always loved it. Now I'm almost 32. I'd like to see how it has changed. I haven't actively gamed in about 10 years. I am familiar with almost all the books/systems the exception being PFRPG. I was grew up with DnD (9-12) so it seemed a little redundant. Palladium got me through Jr and Sr High School. I moved about 10 years ago and lost touch with my gaming community/soul for a while. Now I'm back and ready to bring my full flavor back to the Megaverse. I do look forward to meeting ya'll and stealing a trick or three for my GMing repertoire. You'll probably enjoy meeting my aptly titled "better half" more than myself. I'm a little less well refined. Thanks again for all the suggestions. We'll see in 2.5 weeks.
