a) It means that they don't have to announce trying for a crit hit.

b) Multiple Parry is for when you are fighting multipe opponents and hase been in the gaming system sence N&S, AMParry means you don't use an APM to MParry.

Yep...matter of cross-game translation. That section of what was a "Frankenstein" article ofcompiled smaller articles was written mostly with N&S in mind. Game differences = confusion sometimes. Sorry for any difficulty.

I had a question about this same article: how do weapon katas mix with weapon specialization and weapon mastery? Or do they not mix at all?

A Weapons Kata (WK) is basicly a Weapon Profisency (WP) that is an augment part of a Martial Artist Form, to use a Weapons Specilization (WS) or Weapons Mastery (WM) it would have to be a WS Kata or WM Kata becasue the WS/WM level of skill is mis-matched to the MA Form. In my humble opinion.

drewkitty ~..~ is basically correct...

A weapon kata is just another way of saying weapon proficiency but instead of it being a universal weapon like W.P. Sword, its specific as to the kind of weapon you want to use...like W.P. Bastard Sword. Also, the general W.P. Sword can be used however you want, while the weapon kata can only be used with a specific style that says you can use that specific weapon...like Chi Hsuan Men - White Jade Fan. The weapon kata's for that style allow only the use of W.P. Blunt, W.P. White Jade Fan, W.P. Paired Weapons, W.P. Paired White Jade Fan. No other weapon proficiencies can be used in tandem with that style and receive the listed HtH bonuses. But that only applies if you use that rule set from Ninja's and Superspies. If you don't then your already 1/2 way to being able to use Weapon Specialization since you have to choose a specific weapon to specialize in.

If you do use that rule set in tandem with WS/WM, then its as simple as saying...unless the weapon your are planning on specializing in is a part of the available kata's for your hand to hand style, then it would be ultimately pointless since you wouldn't gain the full benefits from the specialization/mastery.

This info can be found on pages 81, 82 and the top left of 83 regarding kata's. 3 tiny paragraphs going into slightly more detail that what I just said.

Those are pretty much how we saw things. Seperate issues entirely.

Levi originally made the Wep Spec/Mast rules with PF in mind. Basically the original idea was to make MAA characters worth playing again when a Mind God or Wizard with WP and HTH MA could otherwise hold their own against a Knight in a sword fight.

It's probably best to keep them out of N&SS entirely since the combat rules are so different there.

rifter 30 is one of my top three rifters for building any sort of character. The only other ones I think can compare would be the go mental article.
