Tearing off the Veil of Bad Editing

There is a lot of trouble with perceptions of what classes are what because PB is not applying the correct class labels to the different classes. The following lists will, I hope, shed a little light on which classes are what after striping away the stylistic choices PB has been making for the class labeling for Rifts and the other settings. The Lists will also be in no particular order, but I will try to stick to the order of publication where it is convenient.

Because some classes have more then one option in them, they will be broken up into the options. I will also be breaking up any Race stats from any ROCCs they are attached to, and listing races as races.

Each entry will have the class name, what type of class it really is, and wether or not the published canon PF MultiClassing rules (in the High Seas book) would apply to it, and what type of class (man at arms, adventurer, magic) is generally cat.ed as.
OCC: Occupational Char Class
PCC: Psychic Char Class
ROCC: racially restricted OCC
DCC: Dragon Char Class
PRCC: Psychic Racial Char Class
NCC: NPC Char Class
MCC: Magic Char Class (learned magic users)
PMCC: Psychic Magic Char Class (intuitive magic users)
GMCC: Granted Magic Char Class
RCC: Racial char class (all members of this race are the RCC unless they do not have the racial powers, then as per class)
Mod: Modification, this is just adds or takes away from the race stats
MACC: magically augmented char class
RMCC: racial restricted Magic class
UCC: Undead char Class (all of these are optional)
SCC: Symbiote Char Class
RPCC: Racial restricted Psychic char class
ACC: Augmenteed Char class
DOCC: Dimensionally restricted OCC
RCMCC: Racial restricted GMCC
?CC: there is a variable in the class as published that makes it not just one type of class
RACC: racially restricted ACC

Note: Please do not argue about the differences between what is "book correct" and what you see here. This is something that at it's basic conception says that ALL the Book Correct labels are subject to revision to "what the class actually is."

Note 2: This will not be covering HU, BTS1 nor BTS2 because they do not use the Class System of the other books. And will not be covering the RT1 nor the RT2 books so not to anger HG about anything. Nor will I be doing the DR books cause I don't have/will not be getting them.

Honest answer? You're wasting your time defining everything up front laying down restrictions, you should stop before people start pointing.

You're better off skipping the list, and pre-gen'ing all of your characters for your players instead of them coming to the table with a character and you saying that's unacceptable, let them choose from what you are going to approve since you are removing the imagination of character creation anyhow.

while i may not like some people in games . . and some others are massive sticklers for rules and regulations and then others still enjoy tweaking or twisting them . . .

for the new kid on the block, i think that this table is actually a good thing to have.
it answers some of MY questions about classes and 'well is it allowable?'

after all . . i got too many people telling me that 'Wolven' [ the PW space variety mind you] CANT be a TW. its not allowed in the books.

some say yes . . other say no . .
its up to the GM to allow or not is the final concensus.
so lets not the hard work guys . . this answers questions for some people out there that don't have tons of time to read all the books cover to cover and know it by heart

Creator of the Chi grenade. Used in game by Kevarin [GM] and self as Mai - Civilian Martial artist that got amped via experiment. Ghost weapons and shirts rule.

Nano Missiles - used once and GM banned further use. They weren't THAT bad. and did stop a demon scout ship from returning with valuable info.

It is the warlock's nature that put them into the class they are in, not any choice they made.
The rules about changing the class of the char is about when a char chooses to change. The only reasons that a warlock would change their class is a lost of faith (which they would loose their powers) or the granted powers are withdrawn.

So the only time they would get a new class was when they are no longer a warlock.

They can multi-class as other kinds of Warlocks, at least. There was an old PFRPG adventure based on an NPC that had (iirc) studied all four elements.

Unless you were a level 5 mercenary first, then became a warlock... It never states once you become a warlock, you cannot pursue other interest. Or do you feel that a warlock could not become a scholar?

nothing wrong with "correcting" the labels...
I just think you could do with fewer as most would fit neatly under one of those four.
For Example: a Race Restricted class is a RCC (only beings of that race can be one)

as to your view on warlocks... it is your view not the books nor anyone elses for that matter.

i never thought i'd see the age old "splitters vs lumpers" divide with any palladium topic.

Drewkitty is a splitter, using even minor differences to justify the creation of new categories, creating a complex system.

personally i lean more towards being a lumper.. i think palladium does have a tendency to shoehorn their creations by using some terms (like R.C.C.) too broadly, but i'd rather have a system with 3-4 broad categories than a system where i need an index just to keep track of the terms in use..

Personally, I think Drew Kitty is showing just how absolutely bug nuts the logic is for the character class layout as written. The game would probably be better off if the class system ran off a dependency structure similar to the MOS options for military OCCs, with player races divided into either a selectable base race for OCCs or a selectable monsterous race with their own RCC dependency structure. For example, "Cyborg" would be a base class, the models would be one step further up, and then each model would have it's own starting skill packages that are available. Dragons could be worked the same way (and actually are to some degree), with the "Dragon Hatchling" being the base class and the various types of dragons being the next step up. Obviously, given the number of OCCs out there this kind of organization structure would probably be a bit of work to get fully running, but it's definitely worth the effort.

Generally speaking, Palladium seems to be trying to implement this kind of logic system already, but it's throwing everything together as one package in each OCC and RCC that is released, which generates unnecessary work. Imagine how much simpler life would be if all the rules that govern cyborgs were written in one specific core book: Each time a new world book is released with a new cyborg model, the author would just have write out the models stats and reference the skill packages that go along with it (including any skill substitutions such as languages). Likewise, if a new edition of the game came out that altered certain rules, there would be no need to update any of the world books (maybe errata for any new monsters) since all the world books do is list out new options for a base class and expand the setting.

Some of the base classes I can think of off the top of my head just from looking at the main book would be Soldier, Knight, Cyborg, Mage/Magus, Psychic, Mystic, Adventurer, dragon, and Special Forces (which ironically can include headhunters).

Suddenly this doesn't seem much different than software engineering. :)

My apologizes, I thought he was stating that the list is canon, and not his own opinion. I Just misunderstood lol.

But on the point of class labeling, to me most classes are just O.C.C., be it wizard, monk, scholar or paladin. Psychics are there own category (P.C.C.), while of course R.C.C. are restricted to a particular race. To me adding more labels seems to complicate matters more.

But that's just me, Drew has done a good job on his list, and if it helps out a few people all the better! :)

On one hand, I will say this is a pretty cool effort to give a further break down of the the various classes, and I do think this can be an awesomely handy reference for people to refresh themselves on what type class something is without digging up and reading the entry.

On the other hand, it is entirely too much break down for actual use in the rules or publications. The KISS principle is a very important one, and keeping it to general categories is for the best. As a basic break down, the OCC/RCC/PCC and Adventurer/Scholar/Man-at-Arms/Magic-User works pretty well, though I will join you in some frustration at the apparent shift toward making that OCC/RCC and Adventurer/Scholar/Man-at-Arms/Magic-User/Psychic, I'm not going to crusade against it.

Seriously, you are an awesome poster, and make awesome posts. I just wish you would tone down this trend of 'PB is wrong and their classes are bad and stupid!' that pervades your every post on this subject. That you like your breakdown more is fine, and even that you disagree with how they are officially done and why is a-OK, but it seems like you have to throw a dig in every other line, and filtering through that gets old.

If you had read the disclaimer was in the opening post it should of explained that this whole topic was 'non-canon'.

You may want to rephrase it a bit, it isn't so clear at the moment. The closest it gets is the 'Note' halfway down the first post, which really isn't that clearly stated at the moment. Also 'what it really is' on it's own is a bit skewing.

Perhaps something more like:
Note: Please do not argue about the differences between this and what is in the books. This is a revision of the book listings to a system of labels that I believe are more accurate.

As far as 'Note2', if we're redoing the class labels, why not hit HU and BTS too? Skill selection works differently in 'modern' settings, but they are still effectively classes.

Yet he has a point. It is unreasonable to expect to have no commentary when you comment on a public forum. I, for one find that the classifications you presented here are more along the lines of obsessive nitpicking rather than anything truly constructive. As a game that has hundreds and thousands of rules I find that the classifications that exist now work just fine. Anything else really is up to the individual group/gm.

Caution these rules are unclear and may be open to gross interpretation and out right misinterpretation. GM discression is strongly advised.

Normally I frown on bringing something from a PM into the open, but it had been more about things that should be in the thread already, not a PM in the first place.
You have already demonstrated you do not understand the differenc between a "class" and a "Power cat" and the why the there is a incombatablitiy issue between the two formats.
Actually, I believe I demonstrated that there is not an incompatibility with your labeling system.
Frankly this topic is me posting where I see PB has gone wrong with their labeling.
And as someone trying to put proper labels on things, I am surprised that you balk at relabeling everything in terms of 'what they really are'. The only arguments you could make against that would be the same ones people could make about the rest of your efforts here.
