MadManMike and I have actually conversed about this before. I think it could actually work if gaming became more mainstream (another reason I'm an MA  ), especially if you sold it similar to clowns and magicians (doing birthday parties for older kids, pre-teens, and teens). Unfortunately, I think there's probably still too much bias (against gaming in general) and not a concentrated enough consumer base to cater to.

Personally, I'd love to do it for a living. Now, if only we can get Palladium big enough to subsidize it as another marketing strategy...

I thought it was amusing in KoDT when they talked of Brian GMing 6 games a week, charging $5 a head, or something like that, but that's a comic book.

Actually, I seem to remember a story I was told at a Con...
(Warning: Second-hand story; likelihood of fabrication - medium)

Apparently, there's a female GM somewhere in Arizona (Tempe, IIRC) that ran games so well that her group, composed of working professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc), chipped in, and provided a living wage (I heard 40-50k) for her, just to work on making games for them.

I personally figure the story is a lot like the dream of getting paid 100k for playing video games, but I've since found out some people actually do that, so who knows...?

I doubt that it would ever work.

Also if there is a woman in Vegas that is making mid 5 figures running game sessions she is doing more than just GM'ing... I would bet her income comes from roleplay of a different sort that invloves french maid and schoolgirl outfits. :P

I've been hearing that one for years although the location changed based on where I was at the time. While at BSU (before my military career) I heard rumors of this person in Anderson. My first assignment was in Tucson, AZ and the rumor was of a DM in Phoenix. When I lived in Vegas I heard the rumor again. Now there very well could have been a professional DM/GM/Storyteller in all of those locations but I kinda think we have a gamer's urban legend on our hands.

Ghostorb.com was actually working toward doing something like this as part of their marketing strategy. It was going to be a website that allowed you to run games online similar to openrpg or screenmonkey, only they were also incorporating voice right into the program. They were going to have professional GM's that would run games for those that didn't have a regular group. It was supposed to be monthly fee based service. It got off to a quick start, but after a while development grounded to a halt. The site was up for about another year, but then it disappeared about 3 months ago.
