Hearth Goddesses/Gods

Unread post by taalismn »

Using the Great American Shut-in to work on some old projects:

Gods and Goddesses of the Hearth--A selection of patrons/nesses of the Sisters of the Hearth.

Not everybody can, or needs to, call on a heavy hitter deity to smite one’s enemies. Most of the time, in day to day life, old-believers respect and call upon the deities of hearth and home to bless their lodgings, smile on their homes, insure good harvests, and help them keep food on the table. On Rifts Earth, where it seems the gods really DO exist, the Old Believers pay as much respect, if not more, to their household gods as they do the actions of the aggressive, prominent, and primeval deities(conversely, others try NOT to call any divine attention to their direction, seeing such as a BAD thing). You may not always have a need to smite some great enemy, but you have to have your daily bread and drink.
What follows are a few gods and goddesses, admittedly weaker and not as well known as Zeus, Brahma, Odin, Vishnu and the like, but who arguably have greater appeal to the common folk who just want to have a good meal, a good drink, a good harvest and healthy children. Though not very powerful(many of them are little more powerful than a Godling), they are seldom openly attacked by their more powerful god-kin, in part because the latter too appreciate a good drink, good food, and healthy mortal followers to impress/terrorize. There’s also the matter of status; many of the more powerful gods and goddesses feel it’s hardly worthy to attack the equivalent of grocers and barkeeps(though this is not likely to be the case during the Minion War).

Although there has been a revival of interest in many old beliefs and much renewed worship of older gods and goddesses in Rifts Earth, not all of those so called upon have taken an interest in events on Rifts Earth. For many of the minor and less-powerful god-entities, Rifts Earth, for all the energy surging through its leylines and coursing through its atmosphere, represents a high-stakes, high-risk, environment that has attracted the sort of big guns and big players that those without serious firepower or big ambitions aren’t about to risk dabbling in, for fear of attracting the wrong sort of attention. Then, too, for every faithful Old Believer, there’s a greater number of more modernly-inclined natives who look at anything that smacks of links to supernatural powers as suspicious. Faced with that sort of well-armed paranoia, most of the less powerful god-entities will seek easier surroundings to cultivate followers in. Still, some of the braver and compassionate gods and goddesses cannot ignore the plight of the innocent, the calls for help of the faithful, or the knock of opportunity.

Like Palladium, I’m playing fast and loose with these ancient deities, based on scant available information. To the countries of origin, and those old believers, my apologies; I hope I’ve presented versions here that are not disrespectful.

Ninkasi, Sumerian Goddess of Brewing, Alcohol, and Beer
All but unknown and overlooked these days(aside from a number of microbreweries bearing her name), at one time Ninkasi, daughter of Enki, was once very highly regarded. One of eight children conceived to heal her father from wounds, she was born of ‘sparkling fresh water’. This heritage gives her mystical powers over water, especially fresh water.
A rather humble and ‘working’ goddess, Ninkasi is a brewmaster, preparing alcoholic beverages to sate the thirsts of her fellow deities.
Ninkasi can also be said to be a goddess of both pleasure and healing, as the products of her labors can be used for both pleasure and medicinal effect. She is also a fair hand at brewing healing potions and medicines, quite understandable given that her father is Enki, God of Magic and Waters.
As a minor goddess(but one arguably very important to mortals) Ninkasi is content to remain aloof from pantheon politics, power plays, and the greater activities and maneuverings of gods, goddesses, and alien intelligences. Though a goddess of alcohol, she is not a party animal or drunkard in the way of such others as Dionysus, Silenus, or Tezcatzontecatl, though she’s no slouch when it comes to downing a tall brew. On the whole, though, she prefers to imbibe quietly and in moderation, and spend her time in the company of other brewers, sampling good drink(quality over quantity) and swapping recipes and brewing tales.
Ninkasi is not likely to get directly involved with adventurers against any great evil, but she is most likely to supply those she comes in contact with with healing potions and services, and good drink. Her homes away from home are breweries, ideally not far from a good water source, such as a river or spring. Though initially dismayed by the growth of technology and the abuse heaped on the environment by it, Ninsun has learned to appreciate certain aspects of modern technology; she is particularly interested in modern pollution control and water purification techniques(her father, ever fascinated with applicable knowledge, has encouraged her researches on the topics).

Disposition:
A humble, hardworking young woman with a love of life, healing, and water. When entertaining, she can become pleasantly tipsy and maudlin, but can keep working with serving out the beer without losing pace or grace. She is quick to offer a cold drink (of pure water or good beer) and a healing draught to those in need. She despises polluters, especially those who foul sources of water, and isn’t fond of those who use poisons either.

*Shovel---Despite its small size, Ninkasi’s shovel can actually mystically move far more than its scoop would seem to be able to hold. She can shovel her maximum strength amount x10 using the shovel. Used as a blunt weapon, the shovel does 1d4x10 MD on a strike.

*Beer Cask---A gold- and silver-chased wooden cask that delivers up a seemingly endless amount of perfect beer(anybody tasting of it, regardless of their differing tastes in beer, will taste what they consider the perfect beer). Many beings in the Megaverse would kill to obtain this artifact, and just as many would kill to get it back, just to make Ninkasi happy and making more beer. However, stealing the keg will not yield up its bounty, as Ninkasi can turn off its flow at will.

Relations:
Ninkasi knows both Dionysus and Silenus socially, though she always manages to slip away from their parties before they get too drunk and try to get intimate with her. She frequently hangs out with the Zulu goddess Mbaba Mwana Waresa on the latter’s searches for true love, and with the goddess Yasigi. She has pleasant and cordial relations with Ganesh and Hanuman, both of whom she finds good company. She also has swapped brewing secrets with the Norse sea-god Aegir, but finds that the mercurial and stormy sea-god can become quite unpleasant when angered or drunk. Likewise, she is leery of Soma, despite the Veda god’s expertise with potions. Ninkasi probably gets along best with the Egyptian god Osiris, who, in his role as a god of agriculture, also oversees beer-making. Osiris, overlooking whatever feuds the Egyptian and Babylonian pantheons may have with each other, regards Ninkasi almost as another daughter of his(Enki has decided to turn a blind eye to this, and quietly approves of it, seeing any good relations between the two pantheons as a good thing against the forces of Darkness) and the two spend their visits together swapping tales of water and agriculture, as well as brewing(and sampling beverages they’ve come across or have created).

Radegast---Czech/Slavic God of Hospitality
Radegast is one of the few male deities that Sisters of the Hearth can turn to for patronage. Generally overlooked in the clash of pantheons, Radegast has retained a small niche in the old believer households and hearths of eastern Europe. He is the God of Hospitality and Mutuality, and minors in agriculture. He is said to have introduced beer(and alcohol) to mortals. He has also been variously identified with war, fire, and evening(though arguably all of those can factor into the need for an evening’s hospitality).
In the age of the Rifts on Earth, where people tend not to trust strangers, Radegast is enjoying a surprising revival as people take their hospitality seriously as a means of binding communities and gathering allies and friends. As a god of hospitality, Radegast firmly sticks by his principles and protocol. This, by extension, makes him a fair diplomat and an excellent host for high level diplomatic and business meetings. He has no temples as such, but his places of worship and power tend to be meeting/feasting halls, dining rooms and kitchens, taverns and meaderies. He is rumored, on Rifts Earth, to have taken over a former Communist Party mountaintop headquarters building in Bulgaria, renovating and turning it into a lodge where he entertains mortal and immortal guests alike. He has supposedly staffed the facility with both mortal and supernatural attendants, and runs it like a hotel or tavern.
Like many of fhe gods of local and so-called ‘minor’ pantheons, Radegast tries to remain clear of the power maneuverings of the larger pantheons that have rolled through his regions. The Czech gods have generally had lukewarm relations with the Olympian pantheon to their south, and the Norse gods from the west. Radegast generally gets along well with just about anybody who doesn’t abuse his hospitality, but he gets along best with other hearth gods and goddesses. He is fast friends with the Russian god Dazhbog(see Rifter #6, Russian Gods) and the two frequently meet to drink and socialize(especially during the night, when Dazhborg is weaker and frailer; he can find a good place to shelter and rest under Radegast’s roof). He has his differences with the wind god Stribog, however, on account of the Russian god swiping a cloak of Radegast’s in order to disguise himself and seduce a moon goddess who had a serious crush on Radegast(Radegast is more upset about the theft of his cloak than the identify theft and seduction). He has a very friendly dispute with the Sumerian goddess Ninkasi over who really invented beer, and their cordial meetings often have a running argument over the pros and cons of warm brewing versus cold brewing methods. Radegast is also very familiar with Dionysus, enough that the principled Radegast can get quite exasperated with the drunken shennanigans of the Olympian. Radegast has also been asked on several occasions to be host to diplomatic talks between the Olympian, Norse, and Russian pantheons.

Some mystics, however, claim that Radegast is a ‘new god’, actually a modern amalgamation of several earlier nature and hearth spirits, given final form by human action, with little in the way of truly ancient deific roots or history of worship. This might explain Radegast’s relatively low power levels. Though the more conservative gods use this to dismiss Radegast as inconsequential and unworthy of their respect and attention, other gods cite this as all the more reason to use him as a host for their events, as he carries little, if any, of the baggage of older, more established, gods and pantheons.

Alignment: Principled
Land of Origin: Central Europe
Age: Appears to be in very robust 30’s or 40’s

Physical Description/Appearance:
A robustly-healthy and heavily-musculed male human(oid) with thick, curly dark hair and completely black skin. He traditionally wears a bull’s head headdress or helmet and leather cape, and carries a drinking horn, brimming with beer.

Disposition:
Radegast’s pugnacious features and hulking appearance belie his warm, friendly demeanor. Radegast is welcoming, cheery, and the perfect host, greeting even perfect strangers and offering them his hospitality. He’s just as happy helping his followers in the kitchen and feasting hall as he is manning the door and passing out the beer. He is somewhat strict about protocols and allowed behavior, and will stick by his own decrees, even if it hurts him(such as hosting a disagreeable guest, as long as that guest doesn’t step over certain lines). Woe behold those who abuse his hospitality*, though, as he’ll put his considerable muscle to work to chastise those violators.
Radegast is not averse to technology, and in fact has learned to use a computer and drive a truck. Though he despairs about how technology has proven destructive and socially distracting, he values how other aspects of it have made household life easier for his followers.

* This includes those who use the psionic version of the ‘Jedi Mind Trick’ to get past him and into his tavern. That’s just plain -rude-.

Notable Possessions/Equipment:
-Drinking Horn---A large drinking horn enchanted to magically refill with beer of the finest quality. The horn is the subject of some contention between Radegast and Dionysus, who tried to swipe the drinking vessel, even though wine is his favored tipple.

-Leather Armor---Radegast wears a leather cape and bull’s head headspiece. Some observers have noted that the cape and headdress look interestingly like the remains of a Gallu, suggesting that Radegast might add ‘demonslayer’ to his modest titles(and the rumor further goes on to suggest that Radegast slew the creature for crashing one of his parties, though other rumors say it was a gift from Herakles after Radegast saved the Olympian from the particularly embarrassing consequences of a night of hard drinking and carousing). The robe has 500 MDC.

-Rune Club---A Lesser Rune Weapon that does 6d6 MD and Knocks Out/Stuns on a Natural 18-20.

-Rune Axe---A Lesser Rune Weapon that does 1d4x10 MD.

Radegast also keeps a fair amount of cutlery, ranging from paring knives to a magical battle axe, on his person(or near at hand). Most of the time, this arsenal sees use slicing up food or cutting wood, but it can be turned on those who violate his hospitality.

Relations:
For a relative nobody, Radegast is known by a number of gods and goddesses from various pantheons, who have made use of his services. Even those who regard him as a ‘non-god’ don’t go out of their way to snub him, especially if they’re attending one of his fetes. He is acknowledged as a good host and while the big power players wouldn’t go out on a limb to help him in a real crisis, neither will they stand by and watch him get pushed around by lessers. For this reason, most likely, and a hefty amount of magic warding, Radegast has been left alone by the Gargoyles and Brodkil of Europe, who might otherwise have crashed his little Bulgarian tavern/inn.

At first I was thinking "heath" like the biome. There are not really any heath gods/goddesses, so you should do those too.

Well, right off the bat, there's the Roman Flora and Fauna(plants/crops and animals/herds respectively), but there's little I can find on their worship.

Demeter could be considered that, and by extension her daughter Persephone.

The main problem is that most early civilizations tend to see the environment and the deities running them in association with 'what can I can out of them at harvest/hunt time' and 'how can I not get killed by them/earthquake/flood/lightning, disease/etc.?")

There's a number of minor Egyptian gods/goddesses who are of interest, in their domains over writing and craftsmanship, and two very impressive(if suggestively off-camera) goddesses and gods of the earth and sky

I detect a stealth edit....

As for heath deities, I would assume they would have to be specifically keyed to "heath" as opposed to "plains" or "meadows" or whatnot. Which makes an interesting question, how specific does a deity have to be? I would assume you could have a general "weather" deity as opposed to a storm deity or a sunny day deity. Anyway, just a random thought.

Yes, and I thank you for seeing my spelling error. :D
With regards to deities, I imagine that there's always going to be an element of 'locality' versus 'generality', depending on the scale and location of worshipper base. Some 'gods' specific to a region or specific type of terrain, might be grouped similar to the 'kami' of Japan and other nature spirits(but to a local villager, would be perceived as a more powerful being).
But yes, I imagine you find general spirits or god-entities of water, and then specific conditions within them, such as storms or fresh water. Some mythologies get around this by having the conditions related by marriage or divine lineage(keeping it in the family as it were), while others seem more like descriptions of inter-office political squabbling.

Palladium has given us a partial out on this by having god-entities spanning multiple worlds and taking up various faces/avatars to increase their follower base...and sometimes poaching on others' territory. So you could conceivably have. a water goddess on one world having some investment in being effectively a part-time storm goddess on another world, shouldering aside a weaker local water deity on occasions of foul weather.

Ninsun---Sumerian Goddess of Cattle and Dreams
Ninsun is a minor goddess of the Sumerian pantheon, though her area of expertise, cattle-raising, translates into serious wealth in meat, skin, and milk for civilization. Ninsun also has the distinction of being the goddess mother of Gilgamesh, and the adoptive mother of the wild man Enkidu. As Gilgamesh’s mother and a prophetess, Ninsun was often consulted on the interpretation of the Great King’s dreams.
Though her mortal husband King Lugalb has long since passed away, and Ninsun has had a number of lovers/mates(and children), including a tryst with the god Enki, since, she still looks fondly upon all her children. Though Gilgamesh’s growing obsession with true immortality estranged the two, and Enkidu drifted off soon after Gilgamesh’s disappearance, Ninsun has kept an ear out for word of her offspring, biological and adopted. Should she encounter the man known as Gilgamesh, she should be able to discern if the man is her true son or a pretender(though if, as ‘Gilgamesh’ suspects, he may be a clone of the original, this may complicate things).
Ninsun tends to stay out of the way of the heavy hitters of the various pantheons, and she can typically be found in agricultural regions, managing a ranch or pasture land, or serving as a fortuneteller and dream-interpreter. Having travelled in the megaverse, she is familiar with the care and habits of a variety of ‘cattle’, from terrestrial bovines to Splugorth shellbacks, and thus can offer up a wealth of advice about ranching such animals. She tolerates modern technology, up to a point; she’s seen the abuse of antibiotics in cattle feed, genetic engineering gone wrong, and the results of overgrazing on industrial farms. She prefers a simple, less complicated, lifestyle for herself, and tries not to draw attention.

Note: Ninsun is aware of the Dreamstream(see Nightspawn) and has some familiarity with the denizens of it, but she doesn’t actually travel the Dreamstream herself.

Rank: Goddess, Sumerian Pantheon
Race: Goddess, Sumerian Pantheon

Age: Appears to be in her 30’s(which would have been a good middle age in ancient Sumer).

Height: Ranges from 6 to 24 ft.

Appears as a heavy-set, but attractive, mature human(oid) female of Persian descent. She is frequently encountered wearing the robes of a priestess or the simple trappings of a rural housewife or shepardess/rancher.
Disposition:
Earthy and maternal, with a placid, sage-like disposition. While she may not lend any firepower to a good cause, she can offer clairvoyant advice, dream interpretation, or more materially, food, drink, and clothing(especially leather or fleece) to travellers. She is a gracious host, as befits a royal personage(she has been, after all, a queen), but she also can be quite imperious if her good nature and hospitality are abused(and she can direct a stampede over you).

Notable Possessions/Equipment:
Typically carries only the working tools of a rural priestess and herdsman.
*Leather Armor---Though she is rarely seen wearing it, Ninsun does have (several) sets of enchanted leather armor/protective apparel. 400 MDC.

Though not mentioned in any myhology, as a herdswoman/shepardess, Ninsun has learned to appreciate the handiness of a sling; it can be concealed as part of her clothing and it can be quite effective at dissuading predators(both animal and intelligent), especially when powered by supernatural strength.

Ninsun can also be expected to have a few good herding animals like dogs at her beck and call.

If encountered in a rural setting, she will have at least 5d6 cattle or beasts of burden nearby. She can make these animals available as food or transport to those she deems needy/deserving

Relations:
Ninsun typically keeps clear of other gods, but occasionally gods of the Sumerian pantheon such as Marduk , Ishtar, Tammuz, and Enki seek her out to consult with her. She has not seen her son Gilgamesh for millenia and worries about him, and for that matter the wildman Enkidu(who she regards as an adopted child of hers).

"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"
