Quote:

1. What is your favorite piece of music?

"Morning Ragas," Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

2. What is your favorite film?

La Dolce Vita.

3. What is your favorite TV program, past or current?

Karachi Kops.

4. What do you feel has been your most important professional accomplishment to date?

Amistad.

5. Which project do you feel didn't live up to what you envisioned?

Jumpin' Jack Flash. Original script was not a comedy.

6. What is your favorite book?

The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway's masterpiece and one of the most important works in the English language.

7. If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

Everything. But actually, what we should do is give an award for the greatest artistic achievement in film. It would not have to be given each year, assuming – which is likely – that there will be no qualifying films. It is given only when a film comes along that merits it. Who judges? Artists, not filmmakers.

8. Who – or what – would you say has had the biggest influence on your career?

Fellini.

9. What is your next project?

Writing/directing the Trial of Socrates (just set up).

10. What is the one project that you've always wanted to do, but have yet to be able to?

Socrates, but now I'm starting it.

THIS IS AWESOME. a little Q&A taken from filmforce.ign. I feel so much better about this guy now. It is plain to see the man's conviction in creating serious movies. He's got my vote 100%.

Additionally, any man who recognizes Hemingway as the literary Titan he was, gets my vote twice!! Hemingway, my most intimately highly regarded favorite author was as serious as death about writting. It was sacrosanct to him to preserve the purity of literary creation. If he's a Hemingway fan for real and not just being pretentious then EXPECT GREAT AND TERRIBLE THINGS! All hope abandon, ye who enter here.

[/quote]

did i mention that according to filmforce the proposed budget is $100,000,000.00 plus!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All this talk and still nothing new?

Is there nothing new about cast and crew, or even a schedule?

Speculation is getting is fills the pages around here but there are no answers, to the same old questions.

The movie industry moves slowly.

Don't diss D&D it is the world's greatest RPG ever!! Rifts holds the second slot for being a delighful blend of both D&D and Star wars. Oh and Kevin if you could kindly tell Jerry to throw some cyber-samurai and dragon-borgs into the movie us Rifts Japan fans would be very happy. Disney better have Juicers Rifts aint Rifts without Juicers.

The likelihood is it could be a long while before we see the movie. 5-6 years wouldn't be a surprise at all.

AvP took so long because sigorney weaver, who actually owns a great deal of the aliens franchise, held it up. for years she would not consider it=, then when she did she wanted a other aliens movie to come out, then she wanted more conrol, and so on and so forth.

then they had a script, it was terrible (hard to be worse then the moive!) so they had to start over, then the first director was released, had to find another.

so AvP had many porblems from the get go, which is most likely why in my view, the movie SUCKED!

AVP did suck. They should have followed the Dark Horse comics story line. Hell they could have followed the arcade game story line and done better.

Thats another movie though...this board is about the possible Rifts movie. Which might maybe get released by the time the Rifts DO happen.

Rifts movie... sounds like it could be a fun ride. It's one of those things that could suck huge or be amazing. It's a very fragile thing and I hope it goes the way of amazing like it should be.

They'll have to, they would make good screen characters. Plus all they have to do is hire some WWE wrestlers to play them.

Ya thanks for the update Maryann! You rock!

Well I hope the greedy mouse doesn't sit on the Idea for to long. Somehow things can drag out for ever. Generally battle over profit from the movies which brings up the point of Stan Lee fighting to get his lowly 10% from the Spiderman movies that came out. Somebody posted about Kevin arguing about T-shirt sales LOL.

Problem with brining Comics and Roll playing to movie life. Technology is now at the point where they can make those fantasies seem real hence all the Marvel movies. Rifts has it's own issues with that. It's such a fantastic world with so many things that can't be easily done without massive CGI and all kinds of movie sets, costumes and what not. So the production is not exatcly "cheap" So I'm sure theres all kinds of concerns about the investment and the return.

Since the D&D movie flopped I'm sure comparisons have been made. Not that D&D is not great it's just that the movie was bad no fault of the guys at D&D I'm sure they would have told a better story.

So hopefully we will all jump for joy when the annoucement comes out when the movie will be produced. Then cross our fingers hoping that the movie will be well done and gain popularity.

Just think, the longer the RIFTS movie takes to make, better technology will come about, and the better the special effects will be! 8) :D :ok:

Yeah, but at the rate special effects (read: computers) are evolving these days; no matter how good it looks when it comes out, it will probably look cheesy in ten years or less when compared to the new movies. Case in point: Who thought Independence Day had awesome special effects when it first came out? But they don't look quite as awesome when compared to movies like Constantine or I Robot, do they?

I personally don't care how long it takes to get out the rifts movie ... if it takes a long time to make, then it just means that they are actually putting some thought into it. Instead of rushing it & then getting stuck with dreck for a movie

All I ask (like several others have mentioned in this thread) is that it's not anything near D&D ish..I burned my DVD copy of that after the first viewing. I'm feeling something along the lines of T-3 meets beyond the thunder-dome with a little Alien vs predator thrown in for flavor.

Well first off it's been a long time since I posted at the Palladium boards, i'm sure few (more like none) will remember me it's been close to 4 years now.

I dug up some news about this writer and thought I should share it.

Mr. Franzoni has been and still is working on the next Vin Diesel flick with the title, Hannibal the Conquerer. Tentative release date is 2006.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382731/

I've been watching for news on the Rifts movie. Every name thusfar brandished as writer producer or studio are currently working on projects. Bruckheimer has even shut down his message board at his site. I'm getting skeptical in my old age. But I suppose there is always hope.

Peace..

Carnegier Ragnor, Sojourning Battle Magus.

I can only add that I am very enthusiastic about the movie, and will continue to support any efforts to produce one. If for some reason this movie is unable to be produced, I will personnel take-up the mantle of responsiblity and ensure that one IS eventually made.

...So help me God...

if Kevin wants to write how about a TV series? with no Trek to watch (Except reruns) I think it would do well. On the other hand a Phase World series could potentially do even better....

Wednesday 2nd July 2003: Rifts Update:
Dark Horizons scored a cool scoop with the following info on the development of the Rifts movie "Kevin said he really could not give us too many specifics about the movie due to contractual agreements, but he did tell us a few things. He told us that they have a director either signed or close to it that is going make all Rifts fans "wet their pants" when they find out who it is. He also said that the movie has a 100 million plus budget. He also said that he is personally making sure that it does not turn out to be another disaster like the Dungeons and Dragons movie. And lastly he goes on to say that Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have said that if the first film is as popular as they think it will be, that they plan on turning this into 'their franchise'".

Monday 12th May 2003: RIFTS Update:
Walt Disney Pictures has picked up the rights to develop a movie based on the RIFTS role playing game. The movie will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

I've got the lurking suspicion that we'll get something more about the movie at Gen-Con. What with Kevin S. wanting to make it the largest Palladium books presence at Gen-Con ever, and the new "What is Rifts" bit on the website, which makes clear mention of the movie, and K.S. saying Ultimate Rifts was just "one of the big surprises for this year", I would not be at all surprised if he makes a big movie announcement at Booth 213 this year. I look forward to it.

If not, it'll be fun anyway, and perhaps between all of us that are going to be there, we can wheedle some info out of him anyway. :D

I don't think there will be a RIFTS movie. Many times, Hollywood buys rights and the movie never gets made, or is made 20 years later. Just like the HYPE about the latest Indiana Jones movie. I don't think that will get made either.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to be negative, but when you involve great ideas with showBUSINESS... great ideas and concepts fall through the cracks.

I just don't think the movie is on track. I think that it's just a bunch of hype and in the end... there will only be the roleplaying game. No movie. Can someone *in the know* give us fans some hope?

...and this is the beginning of your end.
Just Googled Franzoni and found out the following:

David Franzoni’s Milestones
1986 First produced screenplay, "Jumpin' Jack Flash"; credited as David H Franzoni; provided the story and was one of four credited writers on the script.
1992 Breakthrough script, the teleplay for the HBO biopic "Citizen Cohn"; earned a 1993 Emmy nomination.
1996 Signed a first look deal with DreamWorks SKG to write, produce and direct features.
1997 Served as screenwriter for Steven Spielberg's "Amistad"; reportedly Steve Zallian rewrote his script, but Franzoni ended up with sole screen credit.
1997 Named (along with Spielberg and others) in a plagiarism suit brought by author Barbara Chase-Riboud who claimed "Amistad" was based on her novel "Echo of Lions"; suit settled out of court.
2000 Co-wrote script for "Gladiator"; also served as one of the film's producers; film received 12 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Screenplay.

Let's just hope that he can do sci-fi/fantasy as well as historical action/drama, and that he truly can do good, original work (even if it is based on established material). Personally, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I know I had heard about the plans to do the AvP and Ghost Rider movies years before they were finalized.
