I was working on that very question in another post.

I originally thought about mounting it on a 50mm base (same size as the Glaug base) but after some discussion (and a realization of the size of the recovery pod on a 40mm base), just about any unit mounted on a 40mm base will do... Matchbox car included. Mounting the unit on a base clears up the whole Base to Base and Hand to Hand issues for a tournament or competitive play, but for a simple throw down among friends it may not be required.

Tournament rules will spell out the size restrictions. 2 Convoy vehicles will likely be required for any tournament army, in case that scenario is randomly selected.

For my games I will have 4 sets of Convoy vehicles...

2 bases of Small trucks. http://www.microworldgames.com/collections/6mm-scifi/products/land-transporter
2 cargo aircraft on flight stands. http://www.ebay.com/itm/F-TOYS-1-300-JAPAN-AIR-MILITARY-TRANSPORT-FREIGHT-PLANE-MODEL-C-1-3B-C1-3B-/231352392140?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item35ddad59cc#ht_4482wt_1124
2 space ships on flight stands...Scratch built from recovery pods
2 Battle pods with cargo nets full of boxes on their backs. For the Zents just to be funny.

In a pinch you could also use two recovery pod minis as the Convoy Vehicles.

I bought these today in preparation for my scratchbuilt RRT cityscape.

They're a little larger then the RRT scale but they're passable and cheap! The trucks and buses would make good convoy objectives.

a few other options for aircraft based ones...

1/350th scale C-2 Greyhound transport airplane
1/350 scale set of helicopters and tilt-rotors

there are a bit smaller scale than the RTT mecha, but should work fine.

In your post regarding wing mounts in the stands thread you put a link to ghq would you think the scaleing for the M561 Gamma Goat would almost be right for land convoy models or would that be too large?

GHQ military models are all 1:285th so perfect size for this game. Great guys too, I used to live a couple of blocks from where they are located in minneapolis - they showed me some of their sculpting tips at that scale (the secret is layers...shhhhhhh) and always gave me free crap when I went to play games there or pick up stuff I ordered.
