Yep, it’s the Weekly Update a day or two early. Why? Because most of us will be at GrandCon this weekend running games, talking about Rifts®, Robotech® and Rifts® for Savage Worlds®. Yeah, I’m running three games starting at 10 AM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All proceeds go to charity. At least two will be Lord DeSilca, though I will have a BTS game ready for the group that wants to switch up. Speaking of conventions, Wayne and Chuck were at the Alliance Open House last weekend which went very well, as did my local event. Here is the latest.

GrandCon – Grand Rapids, Michigan – September 16, 17 & 18, 2016

GrandCon is this weekend! I (Kevin Siembieda) am one of the guests of honor along with Sean Patrick Fannon and some other people, so there will be a lot of talk about Rifts® Savage Worlds, and our own Rifts®, Robotech® and other Palladium games. I’m running three charity gaming events ($5 per person) and can accommodate 10 people per game. Lord DeSilca tournaments are always a crowd pleaser and I love running them, but I may run one Beyond the Supernatural™ game for the group that wants supernatural horror rather than fantasy.

When I’m not running games, Chuck Walton II, Wayne Smith and I will be at the Palladium Books booth where we’ll have the Rifts® Poker Decks, Robotech®, Rifts® Heroes of Humanity, Sovietski, two of the last three copies of Rifts® Atlanteans (put aside special for this convention) and a good selection of game books for sale. Oh, and Chuck Walton is bringing a pile of his original art for sale, too. Sean Patrick Fannon is running a few games and may hang out at our booth from time to time. We are all available to chat, sign books and have fun. The van is already loaded up and we are raring to go. Very much looking forward to hanging with Sean and meeting the GrandCon folks.

From everything I hear, GrandCon is a rapidly expanding game and comic book convention that is growing by leaps and bounds. I believe they are expecting 3,000-4,000 people to attend this year. And it is right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan! I hope to see fans from across Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and maybe even Wisconsin and eastern Iowa. Come on down to join the fun.

UPDATE: The Rifter® #75 – “official” source material

The Rifter® #75 is soooo good. Really. We have all spent a lot of time making this issue packed with “official” source material that is different and fun. I think it contains some of the best writing ever by Carl Gleba and myself on the subject of running Rifts® (or any RPG, really), creating settings and Game Mastery. In addition to the Rifts® adventure and gaming advice, there is Greg Diaczyk’s Elemental article, and Chuck, Chris, Todd and Lance’s continuing Splicers® epic adventure and source material about Legion and her array of baddies. And all that stuff is “official” source material, too. Ah, but that’s not all, The Rifter® #75 also showcases Rifts® for Savage Worlds, presents actual pages and talks about how it all came together.

I forgot GrandCon was this week, so The Rifter® #75 should be done by the end of next week. Then it’s a matter of waiting for the artwork to be finished, layout and sending it to the printer very soon.

UPDATE: Hell Followed – 160 page sourcebook for Dead Reign® – October Release

Art is done. Editing and final tweaks are in progress. October release is looking good. Hell Followed™ is an excellent 160 page addition to the Dead Reign® series, with much more planned for 2017.

UPDATE: Rifts® Poker Decks are hot

Both of the Rifts® Poker Decks are gorgeous and fun items that just keep selling. I imagine it is because they are a sweet, visual collector’s item that is nice to look at, makes a great gift, has utility as a deck of playing cards and is just plain cool. Oh, and they can be used as an Action Deck for Rifts® Savage Worlds. Get one of each for yourself and your friends. Rifts® Savage Worlds Kickstarter supporters can request one or both of the Rifts® Poker Decks as add-ons in the Rifts® Savage Worlds Kickstarter Pledge Manager. Both sets of Rifts® playing cards present iconic and dynamic images from covers and illustrations in the Rifts® game series. They make a nice addition to any collection. CoastCon in Biloxi, Mississippi – March 2017

I (Kevin Siembieda) will be attending CoastCon, along with Sean Patrick Fannon, again, the core writer and architect of Rifts® Savage Worlds®, in Mississippi on March 3-5, 2017. CoastCon and Gen Con are the only two conventions I will be personally attending in 2017; that’s how busy I expect to be banging out new gaming product. Some things that will shock and amaze, too. I hope to see and chat with a lot of Palladium and Pinnacle fans. Bring books for Sean and me to sign.

UPDATE: Rifts® for Savage Worlds®

The art and text keeps on coming as these guys work fast and furious on finishing product for the initial release and Kickstarter rewards. All good stuff. I can hardly wait till the books hit the store shelves this winter.

Hollywood comes knocking again

We were recently approached by a Hollywood studio expressing interest in developing two Palladium IPs (not Rifts® related) for film or television. We don’t know where this may go yet, but we are pretty stoked about the possibilities. The cool thing is, the main guy looking at the possibility of developing these game worlds is a gamer himself. He has played our games in the past and was inspired by Palladium’s games to tell stories in film and television. That’s great, because he understands that RPGs present amazing world settings and world building opportunities in which the film company can create the narrative/story it wants to tell, with specific heroes they create.

We are just in the early discussion stages and even if a deal is cut, it does not mean a movie or TV show will ever become reality. Just look at the Rifts® movie deal, 14 years and nothing yet. Ah, but it seems like many of the great movies sit in development hell for 10-20 years before they explode onto the scene. Look at Lord of the Rings. We sure did not want to see it take that long for Rifts®, but we would rather wait a decade or two and see the movie done right than have it done poorly. The Rifts® movie rights were acquired by Walt Disney Pictures in 2002 for development by Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Though there has been no movement on this front that we currently know about, we know JB still wants to make a movie and we have high hopes for this potential tent pole film franchise. I mean, heck, Rifts® has the potential to become the next Star Wars if you did it right, and JB films knows that. So fingers crossed on all fronts.

A weekend of fun and games for us

I was worried that I was getting sick on Monday. Not a good thing with GrandCon this weekend. I think I have just been putting in too many 14 hour days and working weekends. My body started to rebel to the point where I was sure I was coming down with a bug. I had to go home Monday after only 6 hours at work. I took a nap, lounged around the house and went to bed early. I felt much better the next day. I’m feeling back to my old self now and expect to be fine through the weekend. I am so looking forward to three days of gaming, panel talks and chatting with gamers at GrandCon this weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Conventions are a lot of work (including prep and travel time before), but I sure enjoy them. This is the last convention of the year for us. The next one for me will be CoastCon in Biloxi, Mississippi in March, 2017, followed by the 2017 AdeptiCon and Gen Con.

I hope you have something nice planned for the weekend, too. I suggest grabbing some friends and sourcebooks and gaming for a few hours. I hear that Rifts® is good. So is Robotech®, and Heroes Unlimited™, and Palladium Fantasy®, Wormwood™, The Mechanoids® and ... and ...

Sean and I will be doing panels about Savage Rifts® and role-playing game design, world building and running gaming events (I’ll probably run Lord DeSilca/Fantasy and/or Beyond the Supernatural), and Palladium Books will have a few tables in the dealers’ room manned by Wayne Smith and Charles Walton II (with artwork for sale). All of us will be present to chat with gamers and sign books. I am thrilled to have a rapidly growing game convention like GrandCon in western Michigan, and they have even bigger plans for 2017.
